“Are you good?” He emphasized the last word in a way that made her shiver.

“Should I ask you the same question? You tried a cheap trick in a friendly game on Chief Baker’s wife in front of Chief Baker. You were shocked it pissed him off?”

“True,” he acknowledged.

“Can’t you let it go?”

“I think about it—a lot since the Atlantis warehouse…” He shook his head. “There’s too much. He was my friend. Then the dead wife. Then the Hudgen’s situation. It’s complicated.”

“Hmm. I have dead parents. Left for dead twice last year. Buried my uncle. Dated Aiden, whom I still have to work with. He and my best friend are in a situationship now. Oh, and everyone is going to be in a fake Fire Chief wedding.”

“Did you grief story-top me?” he mock accused her.

“Did it work? Let go of the grudge.” She raised her eyebrows.

“Says the person who led a white sugar and flour related rebellion against my totalitarian rule?”

“Crap. I forgot to include it on my list. Since you actually don’t enjoy the fistfights and want to finish a barbecue without bloodshed, it might be time.”

He stared at her face for a second. “Maybe it’s time.”

Oh no.

Her body liked this, whatever it was.

It would be an innocent mistake to drop the towel. Williams could pin her against the shower, and…

HELL NO. STOP.

Luna found the will to speak. “Speaking of time, you need to leave. I need to dress. You make sure the coast is clear and sneak away with your super quiet, sneaky footsteps. If anyone asks, you picked the wrong bathroom.”

“Got it.” He opened the door and checked both ways. As discussed, he immediately left quietly, using those same stealthy footsteps to disappear.

Luna signed in relief once alone again. Brooding and broken had never been her type, and lately these little cracks in Williams’s façade showed through. Despite his rough persona, tenderness and a man who loved deeply lurked beneath the surface.

She grabbed her bathing suit from the sink where it had been sitting and rinsed it out.

It would be good and cold when she put it on before going into the hot tub.

Because, after this, she needed to go to the nearest bar and find a guy.

Anyone with a pulse who wasn’t associated with the fire department or police or the hospital. Nobody needed a bigger complication than she did.

On the other hand, cold might have been a bad idea, because her nipples were already standing at attention before the suit went on.

Taking no chances, she bundled a fresh towel around her and walked down the hallway. She wasn’t alone, because she found Theo and Kevin in the kitchen munching on chips.

“What are you two doing?” Had they noticed Williams had come out of her bathroom?

“Fire Chief and Erin are going on twenty minutes alone,” Theo said.

“Oh, they’re probably talking. Emotions were running high.”

“Yes, I’m sure they’re having a very intellectual conversation,” Kevin said, crunching even louder.

“Don’t you have anything better to do? Like Nikki?” Luna suggested. His newest girl had basically been wearing dental floss, and he wasn’t taking advantage?

“I’m not brave enough to have an intellectual conversation past board games with any girl at the chief’s house. He’s being Nice Chief right now. Let’s not push him.”
