“Other than the seven-year residency?” Alex said and kissed her cheek. “Though he’s married, so he won’t have to wait till after residency to find the right woman.”

“I find it unlikely he’ll get into ENT or neurosurgery,” Daniel said.

The happy banter came to a sudden screeching halt.

“I don’t see why not. He’s excellent at clinical medicine. Good instincts, focuses on the major problems,” Angela sat up, moving Michael’s arm off her shoulders.

“Which is less important if you want to get into a highly competitive specialty based on your Step 2 scores,” Steadman argued. “Otherwise, you may want to consider something less competitive in primary care. You yourself suggested internal medicine. They accept lower scores.”

Angela narrowed her eyes. “Yes, internal medicine, home of the bimbo.”

“I suggest you re-evaluate your clothing choices if you want to be taken seriously.”

Michael tensed, and Angela laid a hand on his leg. “Thanks for the advice. I take it you don’t appreciate Kayla’s clothing on me?”

“You could have easily worn a T-shirt,” Steadman said. “Instead of... that. I assumed the purpose of sending you upstairs was to have you return more covered than you left.”

Kayla could see Michael ball up his fists, and she wished she had a Time tuner or Tardis to rewind the last sentences.

Eliza went to bat for Angela. “Actually, it was my idea. Or more MetroGen’s and Cleveland Fire’s. I mean Cuyahoga Combined. This was a good time to try a cultural outreach look. Don’t you recognize this from Kayla’s cousin’s wedding?”

“What wedding? You wore that in public?” Steadman asked Kayla, full of accusation.

“Yeah. It was two years ago. You didn’t go, and it looked... bigger on me,” Kayla said faintly.

“It’s a great fashion to try out for the Fire Chief’s wedding. I assume the City has already approached you, Daniel.” Elizabeth went on as if she didn’t notice the ever-growing tension in the room. “I got invited to be in the wedding party for taking out the bride’s appendix. And Kayla’s there because she’s caredfor like every member of the fire department by now. I’m fairly certain you’re on the short list of fine upstanding citizens the Citywould like to be in the FireChief’s wedding.”

Daniel instantlydismissed her. “Yes, I declined already. I have nothing to say to the Fire Chief.”

“Oh. What a pity. Kayla and I are looking forward to pitching it. I think these would be fabulous for bridesmaid dresses. Can you see Kayla on the arm of one of the firefightergroomsmen in a tux?”

Four TimeTurners and three Tardises would help here. Possibly a Red Angel bursting through the wall or whatever bizarro explanation they were using on Star Trek Discovery.

As no such event was forthcoming, Daniel turned his merciless blue eyes on Kayla. “You agreed to be in the wedding. With the firefighters?”

“Umm. I thought we’d talk about it, and you’d agree...” she trailed off.

She was NOT thinking about Kevin Jones or his piles and piles of muscles.

Or the time she’s sucked his… thumb.

“I’m not interested.” Daniel’s word was final to Kayla.

But not to Elizabeth.

“No worries,” Eliza said, “There are plenty of Firehouse 15 hot firefighters to pair with Kayla in the bridal party.”

“You don’t say?” Steadman’s voice got colder, which in his case was a rather exciting accomplishment.

“It didn’t seem like a big deal,” Kayla squeaked.

“Not a big deal?”

Marcus said, “Honestly, I think it’s an excellent idea. I’ll be representing the ER in it, showing the spirit of cooperation with our first responders.”

“You would,” Steadman turned back to Kayla. “Bow out.”

“You can’t tell her to bow out. She’s a grown woman. I’d totally do it if I’d been invited, which I wasn’t.” Stella spoke up, kissing Alex on the cheek. “Sure you can’t score a bridal party invite? If you’d done brain surgery on one of them, I’d totally let you wear a tux. Or Angie’s skirt.”
