“I highly doubt Taussig’s pregnancy happened that way. Shouldn’t I have noticed? Pregnancy ought to have been obvious.” Angela pointed at the dog, whom neither of them had thought much about her weight gain or tendency to sleep more than usual.

“Angel, Taussig doesn’t talk, and we’ve both done OB rotations. Pregnancy isn’t always as obvious as it could be in humans, let alone dogs. Had you been planning on weighing her daily?”

“No… I guess we should get doggie DNA tests now,” she mused over the puppies, their eyes still fused closed, sleeping on their mother.

“Yes. We can hound the father for puppy support.” He put his arm around her.

She rested her head on his chest, blonde hair spreading across his arm. “That was the worst pun ever. More of your conversation would infect my brain.”

“Should I have recognized that one? Or are sexy thoughts about you and my Step 2 studying infecting my brain? Latin?”

“No, Shakespeare. Not one of his better-known tragedies. Coriolanus. A roman general gets banished from Rome and makes allies from another city that wants to destroy Rome. He gets there at the head of their army but is convinced to make peace. When he returns to the other city, he’s promptly murdered by his allies for his betrayal.”

“Very lighthearted.”

“It’s called a tragedy for a reason. General Coriolanus should have known better than to tempt fate. ‘Amicus meus, inimicus inimici mei’ is a lie.”

“That one was Latin.”

“Yes, ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend.’ Betrayal can make even your friends stab you in the front without mercy.”

“I highly doubt you need to worry about that with Taussig. She doesn’t seem to feel very betrayed.”

Angela sighed. “She’s fine. I’m not. What are we going to do with puppies?”

“Eliza says she’s pretty sure her kids and Stella will take them.”

“Google says it’ll be at least six weeks till they're weaned, so it wouldn’t be too bad for them to stay here.” She pointed her finger at him. “Don’t get attached to these little scraps of fur, even if they are the most adorable babies ever.”

“I wasn’t planning on it. Though they are really adorable,” he said.

“No. No. We’ll be busy again soon. We’re not having babies—not new fur babies or otherwise.” She blushed when she realized what she’d said. “No. I didn’t mean it that way. No babies right now. Not until...”

Michael swooped down and gave her a quick kiss. “Don’t worry. Not until residency. I know.”

Her blue eyes sparkled up at his, making his heart quicken. “Or until after Step 2.”

“Oh... OH.” Michael considered the implication for a second. “You mean?”

“I mean yes... maybe.”

“Is that wise?”

“Nemo mortalium omnibus horis sapit,” she whispered into his lips. “Of mortals, no one is wise at all times.”

Michael promptly carried her onto the bed to show her the many ways he loved her, even if it hadn’t been wise—hoping he would not betray her trust.
