Becca glares at Cara. "Who the fuck needs twenty million dollars after a year of marriage? Like, what the fuck?"

Cara, in the middle of taking a sip of her soda, chokes. She plops her can on the floor, and slaps her chest. "Are you shitting me? Twenty million dollars?"

Becca crosses her arms over her chest. "Not so smug now, are you lady?"

Cara gives her the middle finger, and gasps out a breath. "Why the hell would they give that much money? It's insane."

"And that's just after the first year. After year five, it goes way the fuck up." She sighs and gets a goofy look on her face. "It doesn't really matter. I'm not divorcing him."

"What about you?" Cara asks, staring at Evie. "Did you sign?"

"Yes, I signed. But I talked to a lawyer first. It seemed like too much to me too. But the lawyer tried to get me to ask for more, even though she said it was generous." She frowns and smooths back her hair again. "They're a fact of life where I come from. Everyone in my old social circle has them. It's the rich person's way of protecting themselves. It's just a way of keeping the government out of their business."

"What does that mean?" I ask.

Evie shrugs. "When you get divorced, the laws of the state you live in apply. A prenup is just a way of circumventing that. Making sure you and your partner's wishes apply, rather than some blanket rule. If you're in a state with a fifty/fifty rule, and one person has nothing, the other is worth billions, then it can be a big hairy deal."

"But still, isn't it a lot of money? Especially for me...I mean, we didn't really do this the normal way."

"Doesn't matter. You're married to a billionaire. So if you end up divorced, you're getting something. And for these guys, twenty million, fifty, it's all the same. A drop in the bucket. It won't hurt them. I promise."

"I don't want to take advantage of him," I whisper.

Holly makes a low sound in her throat. "No one thinks that Janey. I don't know you very well, but I can already see that you're not a gold digger. That's not what this is. So maybe, stop worrying about it. Don't let it poison what you and Jonas could have."

She said it. Gold digger. The word makes bile jump up my throat. Would I feel this badly about all of this if Mark hadn't suggested I sleep with Jonas to get his money?

Probably not.

JONAS

I don't like this feeling. Janey is away from me, behind a closed door. Colton is away from me, behind a different closed door. And I don't know where I'm supposed to be.

I want to be there for my brother. But I want to be there for my wife.

I know the logical choice in this scenario is Colton. He's going through something traumatic right now.

But so is Janey.

I'm not a fool. I know she's questioning her decision to marry me. Giving her more time away from me doesn't seem like the smartest idea.

No. Now is the time I should be wooing.

"So what the fuck are we going to do about this?" Ransom asks, rubbing the back of his neck.

"I'm working to get him released early," Maverick says, pulling the phone from his mouth. Who exactly is he talking to at 7:45 PM on a Saturday night? It doesn't really matter. I don't actually care. He'll solve the problem, or he'll involve us, and I'll figure out how I can help.

"I want to see Colton," I say to my brothers. Maverick retreats to a corner, still talking, but the rest of my brothers nod. Micah moves back to the waiting room door, opens it, blows Holly a kiss, then gently takes Evie's elbow and pulls her out of the room. I get a peek at Janey's wide eyes, then the door is closed.

He scrunches up his face at her and turns her toward the ER doors. "Colton. We go." We all fall in line. Evie spins in his hold, easily breaking his grip. Micah would never hold her tightly, so it's not hard to do.

"Wait a minute. I can't take you all in there. Only two visitors allowed at a time."

Like we rehearsed it, we all cross our arms over our chests and raise our eyebrows.

Ok, we did rehearse it.
