“Well, that’s eh – interesting.”

He shrugged and decided to laugh it off before calling the waitress back over.

“Does all your coffees come with gin in them?” He asked.

“Yep, they sure do! Well, no, actually, we have about three that are just plain old regular coffee. Would you like to order something else?”

“Sure, why not. Do you have a list of non-coffee gin drinks??”

“We do have a cocktail menu, yes; I shall go fetch it for you.”

As the waitress rushed off, I wanted to smack Sam over the head with the menu board. What was he thinking? We didn’t need more alcohol in us! Especially not me as I had already drunk a fair amount last night and I had work in the morning. I couldn’t very well stay out in another city.

“What are you doing? We shouldn’t be drinking more; we should get you a normal coffee and some food then we can head home.”

“Sorry, no, I cannot do it; I don’t drink and drive.”

“You drove me home yesterday after having a beer!!”

“Nope, that was Becks Light, alcohol free. And besides, why don’t we lighten up a little and enjoy this time without any responsibilities. Daisy is sorted and I’m sure what’s her face down at the rink won’t care either if you’re late.”

I felt myself sigh as part of me realized I would get the chance to spend the night with Sam. We may both loosen up a little after a few drinks down us. Perhaps I could finally find out what really happened prom night and why he never spoke to me again.

Once the waitress came back with the cocktail menu, I ordered for us both, a long island ice tea and a gin and tonic. He was right, why not? I hadn’t had the chance to really loosen up or relax in months and oddly I felt perfectly safe with Sam.

An hour or so later, we had consumed many cocktails, several bowls of fries and a burger each. Both Sam and I were giddy and the café was slowly closing up shop. The sun was now lower in the sky as the evening was beginning to greet us. I felt an odd twinge in my stomach. I didn’t want to leave.

“I’m sorry, we will be calling last orders shortly. I can grab you both a coffee to go if you’d like?”

“Will… What… AH!” slurring my words as I tried to pull a sentence together, Sam just laughed across the table. “Will it have gin?”

Eventually I got there after a few breaths and a hiccup or two.

“Yes, I can make you a special one.”

“LOVELY!” I shouted, clapping my hands as Sam finished up his drink.

“None for me, thanks.” He smiled as he passed the waitress a fifty-dollar bill and her eyes lit up at her tip.

“Can you tell me where the nearest and nicest hotel is?”

Why wasn’t he slurring his words? I was sure he was drinking the same amount as me, but now as I looked at him, he had a glass of…maybe cola last? I wasn’t sure.

“Oh, there’s the New Tree Hotel, it’s about five, maybe ten minutes’ walk from here. Really nice place, it’s a four star, I think.” The waitress answered before rushing off.

“You’re staring at me, again,” he teased me.

“No – I,” lowering my eyes, I finished my drink and waited patiently for our takeaway cups to arrive.

Huffing a laugh under his breath, Samuel hummed to the low sound of music in the background as I tried to look everywhere but him. It was just us here. There were three remaining staff. The waitress who was making our drinks, a busboy who was cleaning up the tables, and the manager who I believed was counting the till.

“Come on, let’s go find this hotel then, shall we?”

Standing up and helping me put on my jacket, he shrugged his on lazily. The waitress met us at the front door with our coffees and once out, she locked it behind us. I knew I was tipsy, but as soon as the air hit my lungs, I felt an overwhelming sensation of the world spinning. Looping my arm into Sam’s to help keep me up right and steady, he placed a warm hand over mine and smiled at me.

“How …are you …okay?” I managed to question as we began walking towards the hotel.

“Ah, those little drinks don’t do much. I get drunk mostly on beer.”
