I can’t explain the buzz of anxiety, excitement, and hope that goes through me at those growled words.

He wants me to keep it? He wants—

I can’t even finish the thought, because a man like Nick Weaver wantingmeis ridiculous. Wanting a child who is obviously the product of a one-night stand, or what wasmeantto be one, before we were tied together.

“You can’t seriously mean—” I argue, but he interrupts.

“That I’ll be there for my child? Of course, I will. You can try to push me away, Blair, but Iwillbe involved from this moment forward. I have rights here.”

I open my mouth to ask him whathewants, but before I can say anything, a dark figure steps into the room.

Collin Weaver.

He looks from me, in the hospital bed and pale with nausea, to his son. His face is like a mask but his eyes are blazing, and something tells me he heard every word.

“Dad.”

Nick’s tone is stiff and he straightens, pulling away from me.

“I heard about Miss Morrison’s unfortunate illness, and wanted to come make sure everything is okay.”

There’s no real sentiment to his claim. There’s only the chill of ice as he stares me down.

Nick’s jaw twitches and he looks like he’s about to say something, but then his phone starts ringing. When he doesn’t answer right away, the phone immediately flashes with a string of texts.

“Blair, I have to take this. I’ll be right back.”

“Don’t bother coming back, Nick. One of our investors was asking for you directly, so I offered to come take over so you can head back to the event. I can get Miss Morrison home safely.”

For a moment, I think Nick is going to resist. I want him to, am practically begging him to with my eyes.

His gaze drops to my stomach, covered by the thin hospital blanket, face shifting into a torn expression. And then he says, “I hope you feel better.”

Before walking out of the hospital, he shares a look with his father. One that looks slightly protective… or maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part.

Chapter 13

Blair

Assoonaswe’realone, Collin Weaver’s eyes lock onto mine. They drag down my body, and under the rough hospital gown, I feel very, verynaked. And definitely not in a sexy way.

The young nurse sweeps in again, a look of surprise on her face.

“Oh, your husband left?”

Mr. Weaver’s eyes narrow, but he doesn’t contradict her. I can only nod, dread knotting my stomach and bringing on the nausea again.

Collin offers his hand to the nurse saying in a velvet-smooth voice, “I’m the father-in-law. Thanks so much for all your help.” He looks at me with a fake protective smile on his face.

“You’re welcome. I’m sure she and the baby are going to be fine.”

And then she continues on with her instructions. “If you’re feeling light-headed you need to sit down immediately. You’re early in the pregnancy yet, and we want to make sure you and baby are safe, okay?”

Another wordless nod, though I give her a thankful smile. A young man, looking bored, wheels in a workstation behind her to start the discharge process.

Mr. Weaver doesn’t move an inch as I recite my demographic info, and I’ve never felt more awkward. The nurse quickly goes over discharge instructions and what I was treated for today. My face flushes a hot red as she notes the positive pregnancy test, and I can’t meet Collin Weaver’s eyes.

He stands there in an Armani suit, hair perfectly combed back, like a statue. Some commissioned piece of a late-era aristocrat. My scattered brain notes hazily that Nick gets some of his good looks from his dad, but the elder Weaver has a coldness about him that makes me literally shiver as a bag of my personal belongings is placed on my lap.
