“I think you misunderstood me, Miss Morrison. I’m not asking.”

That’s clear.

It’s like a slap in the face. I feel a cold, nauseous sweat break out with the effort to hide everyone’s secrets. Mine, Nick’s. Collin’s. For a second, I think I’m going to pass out again, but then Nick’s eyes lock on mine.

“Blair made it very clear, Dad, that we’re not sharing private information. Did you not understandher?”

My face heats and I’m at a loss for words, looking back and forth between the two men. Ben’s picking up on the tension in the room, and he’s not the only one. Vanessa is looking at Nick in bewilderment. I’m guessing that up until now, Mr. Weaver was allowed access to anything of his family’s that he wanted to see.

Until now.

Until me.

“Miss Morrison answers to me. And I was told that she’s the best, but perhaps that wasn’t true.” Collin looks over his shoulder at Ben, his message clear:Fix this.

Ben looks to me, undecided. He’s one of the managing partners, but he’s not a babysitter.

And I’m asking him to promote me.

“I—I’m sorry, I need to excuse myself.”

Without thinking, I stand and step out of the room, striding down the hallway as the nausea hits me. It’s just from nerves, I’m pretty sure. The pregnancy nausea has calmed down recently.

But the cold sweat still isn’t gone, and I pray I’m not coming down with something, pacing and pressing a hand to my forehead.

“Are you okay?”

Nick stands a few feet away, hands flexing with frustration. I should be relieved to see him, but instead, I’m just annoyed.

“I can handle this myself,” I hiss, walking right up to him until we’re just inches apart. He looks down at me with a stern expression.

“I didn’t say you couldn’t, Blair, but my dad—”

“Your dad is my client. You need to leave your personal feelings out of this. I don’t need protection. I’m a grown woman.”

“Yes, a grown woman carrying my child,” he whispers, pulling me toward him with a hand on my lower back.

I sway for a moment. Part of me wants to fall against him, bury my face in his shirt and just breathe him in. Let the solid mass of his body steady me.

But his words echo in my mind.Hischild.

Despite everything I’ve done to try and protect him, to sever whatever is going on between us, there’s still a tether there.

And if I give in…

Placing a hand on his chest, I push back firmly enough for Nick to take the hint. His hand drops immediately.

“Alright,” he concedes, stepping away. “You’re right. I crossed a line. You know what you’re doing.”

I breathe a sigh of relief. The last thing I want is for Nick to get protective and make his father think there’s still something there—that I’m playing a game, trying to trap him and keep it quiet.

“I know what you’re trying to do,” I say quietly, letting my hand ghost against his for a moment as I pass, “and I appreciate it. Your dad is not the first difficult client I’ve had in my career. I’ve got this.”

Before I can step back into the room, Collin Weaver steps out. He stares at me with daggers shooting out of his eyes.

“I expect that paperwork to be in my hands within two weeks.”

“No, sir. That won’t be happening.”
