Vanessa nudges me, still holding her now-empty plate, eyes on Blair as well.
“I’m happy you finally gave in,” she murmurs.
“Hmm? What do you mean?”
“To love.” She pulls back, looking at me indignantly. “Don’t forget how close you were to giving it all up, Nick. Imagine where you’d be if you hadn’t fought for her. For Eli.”
That’s the thing, though; I don’t want to imagine. It’s painful to think of how close I was to losing all this.
“Anyway. I’m happy you found love. Mom would be happy for you, too.”
Vanessa’s words go straight to my heart. And I know she’s right. Our mother would have loved Blair and loved Eli to pieces.
