“You think I know?”

“Okay, each of you give the other one of your shoes.”

Chase and I exchange shoes. “You better not have foot odor,” I whisper.

“And you better not have a foot fetish,” he whispers back.

I blush immediately and I swear Chase smiles at this.

“Okay, I’m going to ask you a series of questions about you both, kind of like either or, and you are going to hold up a shoe to answer. For instance, we’ll start simple. Who has red hair?”

I nervously hold up my sandal and then look back at Chase who also has my shoe in the air.

“Perfect! You’re catching on.” Caroline scans the crowd. “Everyone have their guesses locked in on their scorecards?”

I watch Gram and my mother who are sitting side by side both pull out a cardstock piece of paper, with golf pencils ready to score. “Dear God, what is this? Churchill Downs?” I ask.

Chase laughs. Like a real laugh. I consider that more of a win than I should.

“First question: who initiated the first kiss?”

My back immediately locks up. We’ve answered this before, haven’t we? Or should I answer truthfully? About our real first kiss? Would Chase try and throw people off by changing the narrative?Shit.

I grip the heel of Chase’s shoe and hold it up, trying not to look like I’m guessing.

“Thank God you two know your own history. The answer is Chase, everyone! Chase for your scorecard!”

I dip my head back on his shoulder. “Thank God.”

“That’s what really happened, you know,” he says. Voice low, dipping into his belly.

Dammit. Don’t let him get into your head, Jude. Or into your bed.

“Next question. Who is the more outgoing one?”

I hold up my shoe, no questions asked.

“Another agreement from the happy couple!”

“Nice job, babe,” Chase says, highlighting the word babe for anyone listening. However, highlighting the word babe for me makes my body weak. And almost distracts me from the dull ache that’s starting to form in my left ovary.

And yes, given my condition, I have learned to feel exactly where my ovaries are, thank you very much.

Chase may have pissed me off after we slept together. All the nonsense about the Plan B and everything that followed. That doesn’t mean my feelings for him just went away. In fact, they’ve only been growing stronger by the day.

It’s terrifying.

“Now, here’s where things are going to get dicey. Who is more likely to be running late?”

I hold up Chase’s shoe. Caroline winces. “Our first disagreement, ladies and gentlemen!”

The crowd reacts, scribbling eagerly on their scorecards.

“I was a school teacher, Chase! You seriously think I’m going to be late?”

“I go to court. You thinkI’mgoing to be late?”

His blue eyes are stupid pretty. In combination with that charming smirk, God… I’m a total lost cause.
