Noticeable only to me, Jude jerks upward, like the puppet master of whatever life we lead just pulled her up by a string. She reaches into the pocket of her dress and pulls out her phone, keeping it beneath table level so as not to attract attention.

The screen reads Dr. Foster.

We exchange panicked looks.

Caroline leans over, evidently having been spying on us. “Go round the house and take it.”

Jude’s eyes shoot to Gram at the head of the table and back to Caroline. “But we’ll make a scene.”

“Doesn’t matter, you go, I’ll come up with a distraction. Go!”

Without paying any mind to how suspicious it looks, Jude and I both jump out of our chairs and scurry around the house.

“Dr. Foster, hi!” Jude answers. “No, this isn’t a bad time at all, this is a great time!”

“I know what we need right now! A song! What’s the one you love, Gram? We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle –”

Gram laughs louder than I’ve ever heard and starts singing along.

“Yes, we’re both here. I’ll just, I’ll put you on speaker, just –“ Jude waves her hand toward me. “Just one second.”

I rush to meet her up against the side of the house.

She cups her phone to her chest and looks up at me, green eyes wide and scared.

I want to tell her it will be okay, but what the hell do I know? I’m just as powerless in this as she is.

“Can you hear me?” Dr. Foster’s sweet voice slides through the speaker.

“Y-yes. Hi, Dr. Foster.”

“Hi, Chase. Well, I’m glad I’ve got you both on the phone.”

Jude grabs my wrist and holds it against her sternum.

“We just got your test back and I wanted to catch you as soon as possible and let you know that your hCG levels indicate that we’ve had a successful implantation.”

I press my fist to my mouth.

“So, congratulations, you two. You’re pregnant!”

Jude’s face goes slack with shock as she turns to me. “Oh my God.”

“I know.”

“Oh my God, we’re –” She readjusts quickly. “Thank you, Dr. Foster, thank you so much.” Jude hangs up before Dr. Foster can even say goodbye, although I’m sure that’s par for the course in times like these.

I grab Jude and pull her into my arms, rocking her back and forth, kissing the side of her head. Neither of us can form a full sentence. The excitement is too bubbly and too intense to be sensical.

“I’m – we’re –”

“Yeah… it’s… we’ve –”

Jude pulls back and grins, though tears are streaming down her face. “We’re having a baby.”

I interlace my fingers with Jude’s, feeling her wedding ring clinking against mine. She wears Gram’s engagement ring now without fear it shouldn’t belong to her. I kiss the backs of each of her hands. “Let’s go home. I want to give you a massage. This is the beginning of pampering like you’ve never been pampered before, baby.”

Jude laughs as I pick her up into my arms, bridal style, the same way I carried her into our home six months ago.
