Megan shrugged. “Just what I could reach. And only until I got tired.”

“Well, it was more than I bargained for, and I just needed you to know that it was appreciated.”

“You’re welcome.” Her smile seemed genuine enough.

Who was he kidding? Of course she was being genuine. The only person who had been rude this whole time had been him. He’d called her a psycho. He’d made her out to be the enemy when she hadn’t done anything to earn that title. And now he was finding out she was practically a saint.

“Is there anything else you wanted?” Her mesmerizing voice yanked him out of his thoughts and he brought his eyes to meet hers.

There was a part of him that wanted to apologize for everything. He wanted a fresh start—to figure out a way they could work together rather than against each other. Perhaps he might want even more than that.

But he was tongue-tied. “Thanks for your help,” he mumbled.

“Yes, you said that already. Really, Daniel, it wasn’t a big deal. You had a lot on your plate. I was happy to help.”

He shifted in his seat, his focus dipping to her full, pink lips momentarily. What would it be like to kiss her?

Daniel shifted closer. It was as if his brain had disconnected from the rest of his body because none of what he was thinking and feeling made any sense. He didn’t want to kiss her, not really.

Or did he?

Was he so lonely that he was figuratively willing to get in bed with the enemy?

She wasn’t the enemy, he had to remind himself.

In an alternate universe he would have asked her out. She might have been stubborn, but she had the kind of confidence he admired. She wasn’t afraid of anything.

And she was drop dead gorgeous.

“Daniel?” she whispered. “What—”

He grasped her chin with his finger and thumb, tilting it upward, he brushed his lips against hers. She was soft and sweet. The way she leaned into him made him react almost immediately. His free hand cupped the back of her neck and their kiss deepened.

Perhaps before yesterday, Daniel wouldn’t have dared lose himself in an intimate moment such as this one. Definitely not with Megan. So why was he doing it now?

He didn’t have any answers. Or perhaps he didn’t want them. Right here in this moment he just wanted to be here with her.

This? Beneath the soft glow of the light, in the quiet of the café attached to her bookstore, it felt… magical.

Then suddenly everything changed.

Megan went stiff. She brought her hands to his chest, and she pushed him back hard enough he nearly toppled from the stool where he sat. She covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes wide once more. “Get out,” she whispered.

“What?”

“Now,” she demanded. “Get out.”

Daniel scrambled to his feet, staring at her in confusion. Had he done something wrong? She had kissed him back. He’d felt it. He backed away toward the door, nearly knocking over a display on his way out.

Should he be apologizing? Maybe he should stay.

No, that was a bad idea. She’d been very clear. She wanted nothing to do with him and he’d made a complete fool of himself.

CHAPTERTWELVE

Traitor.

That’s what her body was. It was a full-blown traitor. How could Megan actually allow herself to give in and kiss Daniel? It was just a kiss. How had it been fireworks and electricity and everything she’d read about in the romance books she stocked on her shelves?
