Megan rolled her eyes, moving past the living room to head for the stairs. “It’s late and you’re acting weird. I’m just going to go to bed.”

“Uh… I’m not being weird, you are.” Gabby took the bait and followed after Megan as she headed down the hall. “So, what’s going on between you and Daniel?”

She stopped suddenly and her cousin bumped into her. They both laughed as Megan turned around. “Even if something was going on with me and Daniel, I wouldn’t tell you.”

Gabby gave her a pointed look, staring at her until she couldn’t take it anymore.

“Fine. Maybe something’s happening. Maybe we’re realizing we have a lot in common.MaybeI’m willing to consider the fact that he’s sorta cute.”

Her cousin let out a squeal of delight. “I knew it. I knew from the moment you and he met that you would end up together.”

“Shhh!” Megan stiffened and looked around, relieved to find that none of the family seemed to be nearby. They were all probably in bed which was where Gabby should have been. “There are no guarantees and you know that. I’m not making any promises. We’re just trying things out for the time being.”

“Good enough for me. I want every detail.”

Megan let out a dramatic sigh, tossing her head and acting like this was the biggest inconvenience ever. “There’s nothing to report yet.”

“But when there is…”

“When there is, you’ll be the first to know. How about that?”

“Deal!” Gabby grabbed both of Megan’s hands and jumped up and down. “I’m so excited for you. I just know this is going to be great.”

“Will you just go to bed already? He’s going to come inside soon and I would rather that he doesn’t find us colluding.”

Gabby raised her eyebrows suggestively. “I would wager that the only people colluding are the two of you.”

Megan shoved her cousin in the shoulder and let out a laugh. “Go to bed! Don’t you have to work in the morning?”

“No earlier than you.”

She groaned.

“Okay, okay. I’ll go. But don’t forget. Every. Single. Detail.”

Megan gave her a gentle shove and Gabby laughed again. Back the way they’d come, the front door opened then shut. Megan’s heart sped up slightly and she hurried up the stairs after her cousin. Her vital organs couldn’t take another run-in with the man who had stolen her heart so quickly.

The following weeks were amazing.

There was no other way to describe it.

Megan was on cloud nine. She spent her days working her bookshop, meeting more people in town and staying busy. Then in the evenings, she’d slip out of her room and spend time with Daniel. They didn’t really discuss work as much as she thought they would.

They’d agreed to send people to the other shop based on the drinks they ordered but that was as far as their support of each other went at this point.

It was as if they simply needed to focus on each other when they were in one another’s company. He never asked her to sacrifice her time at the bookstore, which was one of the biggest issues she’d had with previous boyfriends.

There had never been a man who was interested in only what she could give them.

She kept expecting the other shoe to drop—for him to grow tired of the evenings she’d cancel their walks, but he didn’t. For all intents and purposes, Daniel was perfect.

On an especially grueling day, Daniel had opted to stop by her shop rather than meet her at the ranch. He texted her to unlock the door and she let him inside.

It was dim inside, and the place smelled like new books and the last brew of coffee she’d made. Daniel pulled her in for a hug, his hands gliding easily around her waist. “Do you know how long I’ve been waiting to do this?”

Chills coursed up her spine and she tilted her head. “I think I’ve got a good idea.”
