“Your day couldn’t have possibly been worse than mine.” His warm breath fanned against her cheek as he leaned in closer to whisper near her ear.

“Oh, I don’t think you want to play that game with me. Not today, at least.”

Daniel chuckled and she shivered. He walked forward, causing her to back up against a set of shelves. His fingers brushed a strand of hair that had fallen loose from her bun, pushing it behind her ear. “An out-of-towner ordered a drink then made me make it again because I didn’t give her enough mocha.”

“How much did she want?”

He smirked. “Five shots.”

“Oh, well that must not have been enough.”

“That’s why I gave her seven.”

Megan snickered. “Let me guess. She watched you as you put in five and then she was happy with it.”

“Yup.”

She shook her head. “I think I have you beat.”

“Lies,” he mumbled, this time tracing his lips along her jaw.

She gasped, allowing the pleasure from his touch to vibrate through her body. Her head was clouded by his touch and all she could think about was how easy it would be to give into him fully at this moment. It took every ounce of self-restraint to pull back and catch her breath.

Megan pressed her cheek to his shoulder briefly then withdrew so there were at least a few inches of space between them. “Well, today someone wanted to return a book that they’d clearly dropped in a puddle of mud. Then I had someone who ordered a drink made with almond milk but got upset when they realized it had almonds in it so they threw a fit and had me make something different.” She walked her fingers up his chest and smiled at him. “And those were the easy ones.”

Daniel chuckled. “I still have you beat.”

It really didn’t matter to her who won this little competition. Megan simply loved spending time with Daniel. They could have been discussing work or going for a horse ride and she’d be happy either way.

He lifted her chin with his finger, his grin widening. “I got to clean up vomit.”

She wrinkled her nose. “That’s awful.”

“After someone stepped in it and tracked it through half the store.”

She nearly gagged. “Okay, you’re right. You win.”

He moved closer. “Yes, I do. But it’s not because of that.” His voice lowered again, and he brushed his lips against hers. The tingles swept through her body, originating from where he touched her. “I win because I get to have you in my life.”

She hummed softly, her eyes closing. “I like that better.” There was still that small niggling thought in the back of her head reminding her that she shouldn’t allow herself to fall in love with someone when there were more important things in her life. However, with each passing day, she was finding it harder and harder to accept her previous prejudices.

Perhaps she’d been wrong about relationships being the reason for failed dreams. In this situation, Daniel might actually be the thing that could help her attain what she wanted to accomplish.

Her eyes opened and she grinned at him. “I hope you know I love you.” Megan froze. That confession hadn’t been planned. Regret immediately came to the forefront of her mind. It was too soon. Things were just starting to get good. What if he thought she was moving too fast and he pulled away—just like every other guy who had hated that she’d put her business before them.

Already her throat was closing up and her mouth had gone dry. She couldn’t breathe even if she wanted to while she waited for him to say something—anything that would make this situation all better. That’s all she wanted—reassurance that she hadn’t just ruined everything.

Daniel only stared at her with surprise.

The optimistic side of her tried to convince her that this was good. At least he wasn’t immediately turning down her advances. But the more logical side of her knew better. If someone didn’t immediately confess their feelings were the same, there was a pretty good chance that they weren’t ready for a relationship to shift into something more.

She stepped back suddenly, her hands at her flushed face as she turned away from him. “Anyway, I have a lot of paperwork to get done—”

“Megan,” he murmured.

She shook her head. “It’s fine. I’ll text you, okay?”

His hand slipped into hers, pulling her toward him. “Megan,” he tried again, “where are you going?”
