“Well maybe we can just agree on that point and let me continue with what I want to say.”

Her brows shot up and she glanced outside again. “What do you want to say, exactly?”

Daniel’s pointed look said it all. “Well, Megan, you know I love you. I probably fell for you almost immediately if I’m telling the truth. You’re my favorite competition.”

Megan’s heart fluttered. Her palms went clammy and she couldn’t feel her legs. She wouldn’t have been able to climb out of the truck and land on steady feet if she wanted to. Once again, she took in the candles and the place where she first started to get to know the real Daniel. He was right, of course. She knew he loved her and that was the best gift ever. She looked into his eyes and smiled as she waited for what he’d say next.

“I can’t believe you’re being quiet, but I appreciate it.” Daniel’s eyes flashed with amusement and adoration.

She lowered her lashes and then put her hand in his.

“Megan, I wanted this to be a memorable moment and romantic with all the special stuff. But that’s not really us. But I do want this to be at least a little traditional.” He brought her hand to his lips and slowly kissed the palm of her hand.

Her heart started racing and she thought the heat might melt her. He lowered her hand and got out of the truck.

She watched him as he walked around the front of the truck and pulled her door open. Then with a great deal of showmanship, he dropped to one knee. “Megan, I might not have known I loved you the moment I laid eyes on you. The way you got under my skin should have had me running for the hills.”

Megan rolled her eyes, while enjoying every minute of this.

“But I realized there was something special about you. In every way that matters, you fill my heart to completion. You make me want to be a better version of myself and you have helped me see what’s really important in life. Do me the honor of becoming my wife.”

She looked upward and heaved an exaggerated sigh. “Well, I guess I could think about it—”

He released a guttural growl and shot up from his spot to scoop her into his arms. A squeal and laugh echoed through the trees surrounding them. Daniel pressed his forehead to hers. “I don’t want to live a single second more without being able to call you mine.”

Placing her hand against his cheek, she whispered, “You’re going to have to wait just a little longer…”

His whole body went stiff and he frowned at the seriousness of her voice.

“… until I say I do.”

Daniel’s face broke into the biggest smile she’d seen to date. He threw his head back and let out a whoop before claiming her lips in a passionate kiss. This kiss was different than the others that had come before. It spoke of promises of the future. Theirs might not be an easy path but it would be one they would travel together.

When he released her, she had to catch her breath. He set her down on unsteady feet. “I meant what I said. Not a single second. Let’s just do it.”

She gaped at him. “What are you saying?”

“Tomorrow. Let’s get married.”

Megan let out a laugh. “Hold your horses cowboy. Weddings take planning. I don’t even think we can get a license that quickly.”

“Lucky for you, I looked it up. We can get one same day.”

She laughed again. “You can’t be serious.”

“Fine. Next week.”

“One month,” she amended. “We need invitations, and a cake, and what about a dress?”

“You could get married in one of your ridiculous pantsuits for all I care. Just so long as you’re mine. Forever.”

Megan shook her head, no longer fighting her grin. “You’re nothing like I expected.”

“And you’re everything I’ve dreamed about.”

She worried her lower lip then threw her hands around his neck. “Okay. I want that forever. Let’s do it—next week.”

“Really?”
