“You used to be this bubbly, happy, and outgoing person. Then you moved away and ever since then you’ve sorta lost that spark.”

“I lost my spark because I got laid off.”

“Maybe try finding it again before you go looking for a job. No one wants to hire someone who isn’t going to give it their all.”

She opened her mouth presumably to argue and he held up a hand.

“I’m going to get married in a little bit and I need all the positive vibes I can get. You’re welcome to hide out in here as long as you’d like, but no more talk about how this is a terrible place. It’s my home and I love it.”

His sister pressed her lips together then nodded firmly.

“Thanks.” He patted her shoulder then glanced down at the people mingling outside. Simon was still speaking with Brianne, but he was clearly distracted. Daniel wasn’t an idiot. He’d seen the way Simon looked at Katrina… ever since they were teenagers. It hadn’t been hard to assume the two would eventually end up together, but then Simon chose to stay in Rocky Ridge, and Katrina didn’t.

He glanced once more toward his sister who still stared with disdain at the stranger with Sam. Hopefully spending some time with the folks in town would do her some good. There was a reason most city folk stayed locked up in their concrete prisons they called offices, they were fueled by long work hours with barely any fresh air.

Katrina wasn’t bred for that kind of lifestyle. She needed open plains and dirt under her fingernails. And if Brianne could help bridge the gap between those two worlds, perhaps Katrina would have a chance at happiness again.

Daniel lost track of time, chatting with Katrina about what she missed most in the city. Suddenly a knock sounded at the door and Bo poked his head inside. “They’re ready for you.” He gave a funny look toward Katrina who only rolled her eyes.

Getting to his feet, Daniel straightened his tie and smiled at his siblings. “Here’s to the first day of the rest of my life.”
