“Okay,” Gus said.

But he did his best to cover up what was really going on. Did his best to ignore what felt like a boulder building in his chest.

He shoved it off. This was what he’d wanted. He wanted it. And Charity... Charity felt like his salvation.

When he got home he took her to bed and held her in his arms all night long.

He might not be able to feel that light, that hope, for himself. But she was a golden forest afternoon, and he could cling to that. Cling to her.

And he would.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

EVERYTHINGHADCHANGEDin the past week. That day in the forest. Something had fractured between them. Certainly, his barriers had been demolished.

He slept with her every night. Thought of her all the time.

They’d been starving for each other since the revelation about the baby. Like they were trying to affirm something between them. He’d had her against the wall right next to the front door in the cabin. The floor. He couldn’t seem to stop staring at her. Touching her. He’d spent the night in bed with her. Holding her close all night. It had been a revelation. It had done something to demolish all these barriers inside him, and the intensity of it was addictive.

He never felt anything like it. He couldn’t remember why the hell he’d resisted it. Because it was just so damned... It was just so damned good.

And then she’d told him she was having a baby. And it was like a heady cocktail he’d never even dreamed of before.

His.

His.

She was his.

She was giving vaccinations in the barn at McCloud’s Landing, and he happened to track her phone to that location and see that she was there. The perks of now being on the same plan. He saw her, and immediately pulled her into his arms. He kissed her. And she kissed him back.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I can’t stay away from you,” he said. He deepened the kiss, angling his head and growling as he did so. He could feel when she went limp against him. When she surrendered. He wanted to push her up against the wall and make love to her that way, which was something they had both discovered she enjoyed just the other day. He wanted it all. Everything. All the time. And it was starting to feel almost unmanageable. That was the problem. It was starting to feel...

Like a burden. A heavy one. It was starting to feel like obsession.

The word sliced into him, cut beneath his skin.

And echoed in his soul.

Obsession.

Yeah. He was far too familiar with that. He cupped her face and surrendered. To her. Then he did back her against the wall, feeling the press of her breasts against his chest. He groaned. He moved his hands down and took hold of her backside.

“Get a room.” They stopped, and he looked up as Gus walked in, crossing his arms over his chest. “Seriously. Actually. You have a room. So this shouldn’t even be happening.”

“Did you need something, Gus?” he asked.

“The use of my barn. Thank you.”

“It wasn’t going to go any further than that,” he said, his voice rough.

“Clearly,” Gus said, looking more than a little bit amused. Charity was beet-red.

He felt kind of guilty.

“Hey. We’re all going out to Smokey’s tonight. You two want to come?” he asked.
