This was crazy. Even for him, a guy who really was not overly picky about taking lovers, this was pretty over the top. He had seen her in a grocery store less than an hour ago, and he was ready to tear her clothes off of her body.

Of course, it wasn’t that simple. It wasn’t just running into her in the grocery store. It was everything.

All the years of longing. All the time apart. When he had never forgotten her. Not ever.

How could he?

He could only give thanks that he had the presence of mind to make his bedroom look nice. Because in the time since he came to Four Corners, it wasn’t like he had hooked up with anybody. That wasn’t his priority.

Or maybe the issue was she had been all he could think about. All he really wanted.

Damn.

She was like liquid silk beneath his fingers.

He found himself gripping the skirt of her dress and pulling it up, inch by inch, exposing her thighs. He moved his hands down and found her ass bare. He growled. “You’re running around in a demure little dress like that and you have a thong on?”

“I told you. I’m not... I’m still me.”

“You always seemed pretty sweet to me.”

“But not too sweet. I wouldn’t have been palling around withyounow, would I? I’m afraid to be this person. But it’s what I want. You. I want...” Her eyes met his, and he could see everything she was looking for there.

She wanted hot sex in the middle of the day. She wanted to not have to play a part. He could give her that. Hell, it was about all he could give her.

So he gripped that dress and yanked it up all the way, taking it off her body, and leaving her standing there in a cute little pair of sandals, a lacy bra and underwear.

He pulled away from her. “Turn around,” he growled.

She looked up at him, those innocent eyes doing something to him as she turned slowly, showing him just how brief the underwear was.

“Dammit,” he gritted out. “That’s the hottest thing I’ve ever seen.”

“Surely you’ve seen sluttier underwear,” she said.

“It’s the combo of things. I definitely didn’t have any idea that’s what you have on underneath that. You have someone who was expecting to see it?”

She shook her head. “No. I steer clear of the local guys. There hasn’t been anyone since college. It just feels too messy.”

As soon as she said that, he felt a tug in his stomach. Because this was the epitome of messy. Maybe it should be simple. Because they could just walk away and not see each other. Hell, they hadn’t seen each other for years. They certainly didn’t need to see each other now.

But it just felt messy. Complicated. A tangled-up string that was all snarled around his insides. But instead of responding to that heaviness, he stripped his shirt off. And was gratified by the way her jaw dropped just slightly.

Then he moved his hands to his belt and was surprised that they were shaking.

But she was Penelope Case.

Salvation.

And he was about to drag her down right to hell with him.

CHAPTER FIVE

PENNYCOULDN’TBELIEVEher boldness. This was not like her. For all her daring talk with him, she had really only slept with a couple of guys, and it certainly hadn’t been like this. It had all been much more planned. Jude was right. Dinners and talks of the future. And certainly not this.

And then...

There was his body. He didn’t just have ink on his arms. It swirled over his chest, his pectoral muscles, there was even a tattoo low on his ridged torso, emerging just up from the waistband of his jeans. He began to undo his belt, and her mouth went dry. She could see by the aggressive outline in his jeans that he was a hell of a lot more man than she was accustomed to. It made her giddy. She had been shopping for groceries not that long ago. And now she was about to do the wildest thing she’d ever done. Take a trip down the road completely not traveled. She felt alive.
