He supposed that could be true when it came to her opinions on the waitress. But the thing was he hadn’t asked her to choose him a wife. He had asked her to make him husband material.

Because she was all things bright and good and lovely, and he just...wasn’t.

Suddenly, her phone lit up from where it was sitting on the table.

“It’s Ed,” she said.

She picked the phone up. “Hello? Okay. Okay. I’m on my way.”

Then to Lachlan, “The horse is down. I have to help him get him up.”

He started to stand, grabbing his coat off the back of the chair. “I’m going with you.”

“You don’t need to do that.”

“I do. Anyway, I drove you.”

“I need to stop and get the vet mobile.”

“I’ll take you right to it.”

They helped each other. That was what they did.

They drove quickly back to the ranch, and he got into the mobile veterinary unit with her, and let her drive to Ed Forsyth’s farm.

“Itold him,” she said furiously. “I told him.”

“And this is why you need to get your confidence up,” he said.

“That’s what I said,” she snapped.“Dammit.”She put her hand over her mouth. “Sorry.”

“Shocking. Twice in one day.”

“You’re a bad influence.”

“I’m trying to be agoodinfluence. Swearing notwithstanding.”

They got out of the car, and she beat the path to the barn. When they were inside, she went straight to the horse’s stall, where Ed was, standing over the horse. “I can’t get him up myself.”

“Luckily, she brought some muscle,” Lachlan said.

The man looked up. “Hey there, McCloud. Appreciate you coming by to help.”

He bristled on Charity’s behalf. He’d called Charity out, after sending her away, and he wasn’t even thanking her for rushing back. He was thanking Lachlan. Which made him feel that the biggest issue here wasn’t her age, but her gender. That pissed Lachlan off.

“I’m just here to assist. Whatever Charity says goes.”

“We need to get him on his feet. I’m going to take the lead rope in the front, if you can get the back end, Lachlan...”

“No problem.”

Running an equestrian facility, he’d had plenty of experience with horses that had foundered because of colic.

“Okay,” she said. “I’m gonna pull.”

The horse was wild-eyed and struggling, and Lachlan worked in time with Charity, gently getting the horse back to his feet.

He went back down again, and they raised him back up.
