He thought about that for a moment, because it was true. But he still felt like he had suffered for the loss of her. “All right. You’ve been friendlier. But... I missed you.”

She shifted on the couch. “Well. Thanks.”

“It’s just true.”

He got the coffee brewing and grabbed a cinnamon roll for himself, then sat in the chair opposite her on the couch.

“So how did things go last night? With Fia.”

“Oh. She’s nice.”

“Do you think you’ll see her again?”

“If she wants to.”

“You didn’t, like, make any declarations or... Kiss her or anything?”

He raised a brow. “I’m under strict orders to be chaste.”

“Kissing is acceptably chaste.”

He nearly choked on his laugh. “Not the way I do it.”

He could feel her staring at him, her eyes wide and earnest, color mounting in her cheeks. He wished he hadn’t noticed that. Wished he hadn’t seen it. He wished a hell of a lot of things right then. He really did.

“Anyway. That’s um...” She cleared her throat. “I’m glad that it went well. I’m glad that...she seems compatible for you. I mean, what you were looking for. The values and all of that. The ranch. It makes sense.”

“Oh yeah. A hell of a lot of sense. Plus, we already have to combine families at Christmas. And true, we already combine with the Garretts, too, but Wolf and Sawyer are already married so I don’t really have a shot there.”

She laughed softly, taking a bite of cinnamon roll. “Yes. That is the barrier to you being with Wolf or Sawyer.”

“There might be a couple others. What are you doing today?”

“I have a medic check on all the horses down at Windemere stables on the coast. It’s a bit of a drive.”

“You all right to go alone?”

“Yes. It’s my job. I’m okay to do it alone.”

“I can go with you.”

“None of your brothers need you today?”

“There’s so many of us.”

“Well. Maybe you should... I don’t know. Make a follow-up date with Fia...”

“No. I don’t think that’s necessary right now. I mean... I was thinking I’d give it a couple of days. You’ve got Byron coming in to visit and then you’ll be busy. I might work on it then.”

“Oh.”

“I can go with you today.”

His body was tight, and everything in him was telling him that he should give her some space. Give them some space.

He really wanted to get the image of her opening that bedroom door out of his mind. Floral panties and tight nipples and all. Because he didn’t need to think of her that way. Ever. Not ever ever.

Yet here he was, thinking about it double time.
