When he let go, she knew he’d really let go.

“Be well,” he said.

“You, too. Please, Byron. Be so happy.”

“Are you happy?”

“I have feelings that are too big to be neatly categorized right now. It’s a weird experience. But... I’m not fighting it.”

He nodded slowly. “Good. We’ll talk soon.”

She knew they wouldn’t. Maybe they would someday. She hoped so. When he found someone who loved him wildly. Someone he loved in return. Maybe when he lovedhimselfwildly enough for it.

But she wasn’t heartbroken. She didn’t think he was, either. It was a comfort, at least.

When she finished, she texted Lachlan.

It’s done. Now I have to go back and get the mobile unit. I’ll see you tonight.

See you tonight.

ITWASArare day when Lachlan, Brody and Gus were all out riding the range rather than being tethered to equine therapy for the day.

It was Lachlan’s favorite thing to do. Spend these moments with his brothers, surrounded by all the wild. They reminded him why he loved this land. This place. Because of them. Because of his commitment to them, and theirs to him.

Because of everything that they’d done for him.

“I have news,” Lachlan said, his gut going tight.

“What’s that?” Gus asked.

“I’m getting married.”

Gus and Brody both gawked at him like he had grown a second head. “You’re what?”

“Getting married.”

He had called Fia this morning and told her the news. She had laughed.

“I knew it.”

“I didn’t want to hurt you.”

“Don’t worry about it, Lachlan. No offense but... I’ve been through enough that a guy breaking it off after a couple of group dates doesn’t have the power to leave a dent.”

They hadn’t held hands or kissed or anything.

The fact they hadn’t even had a brush with any of those things had to mean the disinterest was pretty mutual.

“Towho?” Brody asked.

“Charity.”

“Really?” Gus asked.“Really?”

“Yes.”

“After all this time?” Brody asked.
