The bedspread was a lovely plush white, and there were fluffy pillows strewn all over it. There was a lounge in the corner that looked perfect for her to stretch out on and read a book.

He had created space for her in his masculine sanctuary. Had given her something soft and wonderful.

“How did you choose this?”

“I had help,” he said. “I asked a woman in the store what she would like, and went from there. But she mostly said that if I went with soft I was going to be doing pretty good.”

“Definitely,” she said. “This is so much more than I expected.”

“I want you to be happy here. With me. I want this to be a life that you want to live.”

“It is. I do.”

Whatever her other reservations were, she knew that much was true. She wanted that. She wanted him.

And suddenly, she was desperate for him. For what she knew awaited them when they lay down in that fluffy bed. They kissed, but it was different than last night. It wasn’t an inferno. It was a slowly building flame. A cozy fire in a wood stove that gradually heated everything all over.

The kind that you could rest in front of for a long time. Not the kind that chased you down and consumed you.

She stripped his clothes off slowly, deliberately, and let the flame of her desire stoke her boldness. She pressed her lips against his chest. Kissed her way down his body as he had done to her. She dropped to her knees in front of him, wrapping her hand around his arousal, squeezing him tight.

“Charity,” he said, his voice a warning. “You don’t...”

But she wanted to. “I know the mechanics.”

He huffed a laugh, his head falling back as she leaned in to flick her tongue over the head of him.

She did not know the mechanics. But she knew she wanted him, and that was going to have to be enough. It was going to have to be her map.

She licked him from base to tip, then took him deep into her mouth, reveling in the feeling of power that it gave her as he began to come apart beneath the pleasure she gave him.

This made the playing field feel so much more equal. She was so much less conscious of the greater depth of his experience.

When he trembled beneath her, it made her feel like a queen.

“Enough,” he said, dragging her to her feet.

He opened up his nightstand and took out a box of condoms. “Also got these when I went to town,” he said.

She appreciated that. Appreciated knowing that they hadn’t been there already for other women.

He had opened the box already, obviously to make things easier in the moment, and he quickly took out a packet. She knew a moment of anxiety, afraid that this was something she had to figure out. But he opened the protection and put it on with practiced ease.Thatwas a moment when she was grateful for his experience.

He pressed her into the softness of the bed and hooked her leg up over his hip, sliding inside her, never looking away as he filled her completely.

Their desire for each other was a storm, and she was more than happy to stand out in the rain.

They found their release together, clinging to one another as they rode out the cataclysm.

Her lips curved into a smile, and she rested her head against his shoulder.

“Just one minute,” he said.

He rolled out of bed and disappeared into the bathroom. He returned a moment later and then opened up the nightstand drawer again.

This time he pulled out a different sort of box. A black velvet one. “I have something for you.”

He got back into bed with her and lay alongside her, opening up the box.
