I nod. "Of course."

"Be safe," she says. "Take care in the blizzard and make sure to keep me updated."

"Will do."

I terminate the call and help Kai to his feet, and together we start down the hallway. He shrugs on a shirt and slips his feet into some sneakers on the way, the two of us jogging down the hall. "Fuck...I need a coat," he mutters.

"Just grab one from the lockers," I say. I unlock the lockers with my master key, then I keep going, Kai hot on my heels and bundled up now.

We follow Emma's scent down the hall, where I find snow blowing in through a back door that's been left ajar. There's supposed to be security here...and I find out what happened to the guard when I step out and find him bleeding out, his eyes wide open, frost accumulating on his skin.

I don't have time to worry about him, though, because Emma's kidnappers haven't left yet.

One of them is starting up a snowmobile a little way away, Emma's struggling form wrapped in a blanket and laid across the snowmobile in front of him. The other glances back at us and curses as he tries to start the snowmobile--but Kai is already on top of him, leaping forward faster than I knew was possible and bowling him over. Meanwhile, I run for the other man, but he starts the snowmobile and speeds away.

"Fuck!" I shout as I turn back toward Kai. I can see other security on their way, but they're on foot--and if we don't make chase on the snowmobile, we're out of luck. "Kai, come with me, we have to hurry!"

Kai's head jerks up from where he was laying into the guy, his eyes darting to the now-empty snowmobile. "Are we both gonna fit on that thing?"

"We have to," I say. "Let's go."

We both rush towards the snowmobile, my heart pounding with a mix of adrenaline and fear. I know that every second counts--we need to catch up with Emma's abductor as soon as possible. I take the driver's seat, with Kai holding onto me tightly from behind. I rev up the engine, and we speed off into the blizzard with the snow and sleet pelting against our faces.

The terrain is treacherous, with uneven patches of snow and ice threatening to topple us over. I can see the abductor's snowmobile in the distance, and I push the engine to its limit, determined to catch up with them.

"Callum, look out!" Kai yells when I almost lose control of the snowmobile. I quickly regain stability, but I can feel the sweat breaking out on my forehead, see them getting farther away. I'll lose sight of them soon in the blizzard...but there's only a few places they can go. Onlyonecabin isn't booked this year, only one shelter is empty.

"We're losing them!" Kai shouts. "What are we gonna do?"

"They're probably headed to the Evergreen," I shout back. "Gotta be--there's nowhere else they can keep safe from the storm."

"And then what? I'm not armed, you're not either...and what if there's more of them?"

"Then we fight," I say. "I'm not willing to let her go. Are you?"

I feel Kai's shaggy hair sway as he shakes his head. "Nope. Let's do this."

Chapter eight

Porter

Icometoina luxurious cabin, my vision bleary as I assess the situation. Okay...so, shit's not great. My hands are bound behind the chair I've been tied to, my ankles lashed to the legs of said chair, and much to my chagrin, I haven't been left alone--which means these guys aren't as stupid as I would have hoped.

There's just one of them with me, and he glares at me as I open my eyes and fix my gaze on him. "Huh. You're awake."

I frown, my head swimming. "You...you drugged me."

"Apparently not with a high enough dose," he mutters. "You really threw a wrench in our plans."

"Well, it is my job," I snort, though it hurts my ribs to even laugh a little. They must have beaten the shit out of me before they dosed me with whatever sedative they used, but I can't remember the events prior to passing out.

"Should have known the Enclave had their goons after us," he says. "You and your fucking lowlife friends...acting likewe'rethe criminals here."

"You've got a funny definition of low-life," I shoot back.

"What the hell does that mean?"

"Last I checked, we weren't the ones intent on establishing an authoritarian state."
