Well, shit.

We all know what happened in Solstice Bay last year: a revolution against the Alpha Control Bureau, the organization that subjugated omegas for close to three decades. Ever since, former ACB operatives have been on the run, and the few Solstice Bay omegas we've seen have some serious battle scars.

"What kind of weird?" I ask.

"New employees, strange men, any guests that seem out of place. That kind of thing."

I blow out a breath, thinking back to anything unusual. "I can't say I have. Didn't really expect that to affect us all the way out here."

"Well, it seems that it is," Callum sighs, leaning back in his chair. "Miss Toure is worried. She asked me to keep an eye on her when she's on the grounds, but she's planning on going out on the slopes today."

"Gotcha," I say. "So you want me to watch over her?"

"If you could."

"What's her name?"

"Emma Worthington."

I pull out my tablet and scroll through my bookings for the day, finding her name on the list. "Oh--she booked a lesson with me, so that's good. I can keep her in my sights for sure, if you want me to give my other bookings to other instructors."

"If you wouldn't mind, that would be great," Callum says. "We'll make sure to compensate you."

"Yeah, no worries," I nod. "So like...what's the deal? I have to admit I'm not super up to speed on what's been going on in the Bay since everything went down with the ACB."

"Where do I even start?" Callum says. "I mean...fuck, it's been a lot. I guess the new government is making strides toward rooting out the ACB, but some of them are in the wind. And this girl's dad is one of them--which is a problem, because she's the one in control of all his money."

"Ah," I say. "Wait--do you think he's like, here or something?"

"I sure as fuck hope not."

I nod, processing all of this information. "Okay, so I'll keep an extra close eye on her. Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for?"

"Anything suspicious. People watching her too closely, maybe someone acting strange around her."

"Got it," I say, finishing up the last of my breakfast and standing up. "I'll go find her and make sure she's okay."

"Thanks, Kai," Callum says, finishing his coffee. "I really appreciate it."

I make my way out of the employee lounge and head toward the ski lodge, which is just about a ten minute walk away. The snow is coming down hard, a blizzard brewing--but that just means good, fresh powder for us once the storm ebbs. I get distracted with the thought of how nice it'll be to go skiing after the storm, my anxiety fading slightly as I start to look for Emma in the ski lodge.

Then I see her--ithas to beher.

Average height, with generous curves that I can see even underneath the layers of her coat and winter clothes. She's got dark brown hair in a short, cute cut, and her ears are covered by a red hat. She's sitting by the fire with a drink in her hand, steam rolling off the surface.

She looks worried.

I wonder if she knows what's up.

I walk toward her, and her eyes dart toward me as I raise my hand. "Hey, Emma, right?"

She nods, looking relieved. "Yes, that's me. You must be Kai? I was worried that I hadn't found the right place."

"Yup, that's me," I say. "So...do you have any gear of your own or do you need to rent?"

She blushes. "I've never actually been skiing before, so this is all new to me. You'll need to walk me through it."

"That's my job," I grin.
