Chapter four

Callum

Idon'tknowwhat'sgoing on with that girl, but I intend on finding out.

After talking with Kai, I spend the day asking around about anyone unusual that's been spotted near the resort, knowing that Emma will be safe with the ski instructor. He's a longtime employee, and one of the only people here I fully trust.

I wish someone had told me we had an ACB heiress visiting over Christmas, but I guess she was a late booking...and now it's too late to vet her, to make sure she's not bringing hell down on us.

To my relief--or disappointment, depending on how I feel about if people are lying to me--it doesn't seem like anyone has noticed anything unusual around the Summit. I spend the whole day roaming around in the snow, looking for signs that there might be trespassers, but I don't see anything. All I know is that there's at least one person who's not supposed to be here...but only Emma has seen him.

And maybe she's just paranoid.

It's hard to tell.

She's been through the wringer, and she would be completely valid in being afraid. I tell myself that's all it is as I head in for the evening, back to the resort's main building, keeping an eye out for anyone that might be out to cause trouble.

I'm surprised when I find her coming in around the same time as I do, her cheeks pink and frostbitten, her lips red. Her scent has somehow gotten even more incredible since I last saw her, and I remind myself this is absolutely not the right person to give into my alpha urges with.

But if I did...

"Oh! Hi, Callum," she says with a shy smile. "I was just getting back from skiing."

Wow...so Kai must have really taken care of her today. I chuckle, flashing her a grin. "Did you have fun?"

"So much," she nods. "I've never tried it before, but Kai was a great teacher."

"He's a good guy," I say. "Safe to be around. I know you've been concerned about the safety of the property, so I figured you'd want to be placed with an instructor who we've thoroughly vetted."

Her face falls slightly. "Did you find that strange alpha?" she asks. "Inari said you would be looking."

"No luck," I say. "Which--I hope--means he was just an employee hanging out where he wasn't supposed to, not that he was an intruder. I promise you're safe here, Emma...and I'll make sure of that."

She bites her lip, brushing a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear. Fuck, she's gorgeous. And there it is again, that delicious scent of cinnamon and apples...

"Speaking of which, would you like some company back up to your room?" I ask. "I can do a sweep before you turn in for the night."

She nods. "I would love that."

We get in the elevator together, the doors sliding shut, and her scent completely envelops me in the small space. I take a deep breath, but that doesn't help at all, filling my lungs withEmma.

I normally have better control of myself...but there's something special about this girl.

Something different.

"Did you have dinner at the ski lodge?" I ask. "They make a pretty good burger."

She nods. "Kai said the same thing--and you're both right," she says. "Plus, I think my heat is coming on soon, because I always get a hankering for red meat around that time."

Jesus--she's making it harder and harder to resist her.

"Have you made a booking at the heat spa?" I ask, trying desperately to take myself out of the equation as the elevator door opens and we head toward her room. "It gets rave reviews."

"Yeah...I was thinking about it," she says. "I've never actually gone through it without suppressants, and Kai mentioned that he works there."

I tamp down the flare of jealousy that courses through me at her words. She unlocks the door to her room and we step inside, with me doing a quick sweep with my eyes before heading deeper in.

"Do you want the fire started?" I ask. "I can light that for you."
