The movement stops, and there’s a long pause. Finally, Callie speaks up.

“Well? I’m right here, dude. Ready and willing. Let’s do this.”

I’m intrigued enough to roll over to see what she’s talking about.

There, right next to me, kneels Callie—naked. Her glorious breasts heave as she breathes, and the blush in her cheeks melts down to her neck and chest. She’s pink and soft and everything a demon Prince of Lust could ask for.

“Callie?”

She blushes harder and tucks a lock of golden curls behind her ear. “Look, You’re refusing anything else. We both know You want this, and I want You healed. If this is what it takes, then I’ll do it.”

She’s right; Idowant it. Her. More than anyone or anything I’ve ever wanted in my long, long life. But … not like this.

I shake my head and go back to my moping, back to my deathbed. “No.”

“What?” she shrieks. “You’ve been angling for this since I got here!” She rips the blanket off of me and uses it to cover herself. Tears glisten in her eyes, and she scrambles out of the bed, heading for the dresser. She sniffles as she digs through the drawers, pulling out a bulky sweater and a pair of dull sweatpants. I wasn’t even aware she owned such drab clothing.

“What are you doing?” I ask, genuinely confused.

A sob hiccups out of her, and she whirls to face me, red-faced and scowling, with tears streaming down her cheeks.

“If You thought I was so damn ugly, You could have just said so!”

Despite my pain and weakness, I work myself into a sitting position. “Ugly? Where did you get that idea?”

Callie gestures to her now-covered body. “The first fucking time You see me naked, You change Your mind about having sex with me. It doesn’t take a genius to figure it out.”

“Callie—”

“Don’t ‘Callie’ me! I must be really fucking disgusting to turn You off from sex entirely! You won’t even sleep with anyone at all since I got here. God, I can’t believe I’ve been so stupid!”

She turns on her heel and marches towards the door.

No! I can’t let her leave like this, can’t let her think anything less of herself because of my hesitation. Though I don’t really have the strength or the power left in me for it, I plane shift across the room, planting myself in front of the door and blocking her exit.

“Don’t leave.”

My command might have more weight if I weren’t wheezing and panting with the effort it takes to stand.

“Az, get out of my way.”

“No.”

Power swirls around her. “Well, You’re not the only one here who can plane shift. I’ll just go around You if that’s what it takes.”

Weak as I am, I'm still faster than a human. I grab her wrist before she can cast her spell. If she shifts out of the room now, she'll take me with her. It's a gamble, but I suspect she doesn’t want anyone to see the state I'm in.

“Let go.” Her voice drips with venom.

“Not until you let me speak. I will have my say, and then if you still wish to leave, you may.”

The magic dissipates, but her eyes narrow in suspicion. “I let You talk, and then I can go?”

“Yes.”

The pause before her answer is painfully long, made more agonizing by the physical pain I'm in.

“Fine.”
