Hang on, Az! I’m coming for You!

I wait for a response, but there’s none. Is He dead?

Without another second wasted, I descend into a hell within Hell.

Chapter 26

Asmodeus

“Asmodeus! Above You!”

Callie! Her voice is like an angel’s song in my ears, so brilliant and melodious that, for an instant, I’m frozen with joy.

That instant is all it takes for My Brother to descend on me.

I don’t feel the blade slice through me, not at first. At first, all I am aware of is Callie’s terrified face gazing down at me through several floors of glass.

“No!”

The detonation of power that follows gives even Leviathan pause. I watch as the tower explodes, sending dozens of envy demons flying, along with pieces of glass and coral. The only thing that remains untouched, the only survivor of the blast, is Callie.

My Callie. My Angel. My Love.

As Leviathan yanks his sword from my chest, I continue to stare past him at her beauty, to watch a transformation that shouldn’t be possible. Huge, leathery wings—demon wings—sprout from her back, and she hovers in midair, an unholy red aura surrounding her. Envy demons flood into what’s left of the tower, but they’re all incinerated the second they come in contact with the crimson haze. Her tattered rags transform into a flowing black gown, and atop her head appears a crown of thorns and rubies.

She’s stunning. A true Goddess of Hell, more than even Lilith ever was.

Hang on Az! I’m coming for You!

Thick, black blood seeps from my wound. I know it’s a mortal one, a wound that even I can’t survive. I keep my eyes locked on Callie as she floats down through the shattered ceilings above me. If I’m going to die, I want to die with her in my vision. In my periphery, Leviathan rears back to strike a killing blow, acoup de grace, but he stops short of slicing through me … stopped by Callie’s hand on his tentacle.

“Back off, Levi. He’smine.”

Her voice has an otherworldly tone, a strange overlapping that is more in line with demonic vocal cords. The tentacle in Callie’s hand, like the envy demons above, disintegrates with the contact. Leviathan recoils, howling in pain.

Callie lands next to me, her wings creating a hot breeze as they flap and fold behind her. She kneels and takes my hand in hers, tears streaming down her face.

“Az, please, hang on. I’ll get Lena. I’ll get Arman and Molli and Oren. Just hang on, baby.”

Her optimism is endearing. I don’t have the heart to tell her it’s a lost cause. Even with all that help, I doubt they could heal me in time. I raise a hand to her glistening cheek and stroke it, grateful for one last chance to touch her. “Don’t let him live, My Love. Kill him for what he’s done to you. To Us.”

She scoffs and cracks a weak grin. “Pencil dick over there? He’s already dead; He just doesn’t know it yet.”

Leviathan roars, and Callie shoots him a deadly glare. “Come any closer, and I’ll fry You.”

My Brother growls, but rather than attacking, he recedes into his human form, sniveling and cowering in the corner, the remnants of one arm smoking where Callie’s aura burned off his tentacle. “This isn’t over, Asmodeus. I’ll have her one day. You can’t stop me now.”

“I don’t need to,” I say, my voice thin and reedy. “She’s perfectly capable of stopping you on her own.”

Leviathan takes a step forward, fingers curled into claws, but he stops short when tendrils of Callie’s new aura slither towards him. After having a tentacle destroyed by it, he avoids any contact with the glowing energy. I’m surprised that he’s so frightened; after all, I’m surrounded by her aura, and it’s done no damage to me.

“You’ll never heal your precious Asmodeus in time, wench! This is beyond what you can heal by fucking him, and the two strongest healers of your pathetic little crew are busy keeping My Sea from drowning you all. If you remove the water-touched boy from his task, you’ll seal all your fates.”

“Bitch, please.”

The snarky comment reminds me that Callie and I aren’t alone in the room with Leviathan. Elena, My Sons, and the wolves are still here. I look to Elena, who still holds her broken arm. She meets the gaze of each of My Sons, and they all nod, as though they’ve had some discussion that the rest of us can’t hear. As all five of them join hands, Elena looks to her sister.

“We’ll take care of the Sea of Envy. You port Oren and Molli here. Cherry and Holden can help y’all, too; remember the Alpha healing magic.”
