I sneak a quick glance at her, and she’s staring out of her window. I slide my hand onto her thigh and squeeze. “Tell me what happened.” I know she has hang-ups about her ex, but she’s never said why.

“He was just a douchebag. He wanted a doormat, and when I wouldn’t fall in line, he cheated. A lot. He always said I was too loud, too much, too in your face.”

“He’s a fucking idiot.” Who the hell would try to change a girl like Bridget? One of my favorite things about her is that she says what’s on her mind. She goes after what she wants, and that makes her even sexier in my eyes. “Is that why you were afraid to start things with Lex and D?”

She turns in her seat to face me. “I’m still afraid of that. They say they like it now, but that can change.”

I snort. “Baby doll, they like everything about you. Especially the things your shit-for-brains ex didn’t like.” I glance at her and then back to the road. “We all do.”

“You know, I joked with Les and Evie about wanting this type of thing but never thought it would actually happen.” I never thought this is what I’d want when I finally decided to settle down. Not that I know if this is going to be long-term or not. But when I look at my future, I see us all in the same place. With Bridget. She has a way of drawing you in and not letting go. “That car has been following us for a while,” Bridget says, breaking me from my thoughts. I’m fucking impressed she even noticed.

I chuckle. “That’s Nik.”

“The hot cousin Nik?”

I roll my eyes with a laugh. “Yes. The hot cousin Nik.”

“Hm. Interesting. Why the extra security detail?”

“We aren’t taking any chances with your safety.”

“Do you really think I’m in that much danger?” I want to lie and say no because I don’t want to worry her, but I also want her to take this seriously.

“I want to say no, Baby doll, but it looks like Ghost’s dad is going to stop at nothing to fuck with him. You’re standing at the top of that list.”

“I’m not going to pretend that I understand any of this because I don’t know everything, but I just want you to know I’m taking this seriously too.”

I squeeze her thigh in understanding. Bridget’s smart, and I already knew she’d take this seriously. I just worry being stuck under constant surveillance will be too much for her.

I pull to the gate at the estate, roll the window, and key in the code. The gate swings open, and I drive to the top of the driveway. Lex comes down the steps when I pull in front of the porch and opens Bridget’s door. “I made space for her car in the garage.”

I shake my head and hide a smile when he helps her out of the car. I can only imagine what changes they would be willing to make just to keep her here. The garage door slides open, and I see a spot right in front beside Lex’s Lamborghini. Nik pulls in on the other side when I pop the door open to get out.

“What’s with the creeping, Nik?” I ask with a laugh.

“I just wanted to ensure you both were safe. The last time you were alone together, you were in an accident.” He holds up a hand when I glare at him. “I didn’t mean anything by that. I just meant that it doesn’t hurt to have backup.”

“That’s the only reason?” I’ve seen the way he looks at Bridget. It’s the same way we all look at her.

Nik frowns. “Yes.” He spins on his heel before I can ask any more questions and walks through the door into the house with me right behind him.

When we hit the hallway that separates the garage door from the foyer, Lex has Bridget pressed against the wall with his mouth over hers. Her fingers are sunk into his hair, and she’s making those noises that drive me fucking insane.

I look at Nik and have to stifle a laugh. He’s staring so hard that I’m surprised his eyes haven’t bugged out of his head yet. He finally shakes his head like he’s trying to shake off the image and storms off the other way. There’s no keeping my laugh in now. It echoes down the hallway and causes Lex and Bridget to separate.

“What’s so damn funny?” Lex asks, throwing an arm over Bridget’s shoulder.

“Nik probably went to jack off,” I answer between laughs.

Lex’s brows furrow. “Why?”

I gesture between them. “The show you guys were just putting on.”

“Why would that matter?” he asks.

I give him a look of disbelief. “You don’t see it, do you?”

It’s Bridget’s turn to frown. “See what?”
