CHAPTER1

KANE

“Put a bullet in him,” I say with a wave of my hand. Blaze, my enforcer, gives me a crazy grin and unloads his clip on the guy we’re interrogating. “What the fuck, Blaze? I said a bullet.”

“He didn’t have anything else to tell us.” Blaze cuts the ropes on the guy’s hands, letting him slump in the chair. “Plus, it’s more fun this way.”

“Get this shit cleaned up. We have that charity ball tonight.”

Blaze wrinkles his nose in disgust. “Why do we have to go to these things again?”

“Because there have been too many goddamn cops sniffing around as it is. And until I find out who’s giving them information, I have to show my face.”

Blaze starts doing his thing to get rid of our prisoner, and I make my way upstairs. I hate these things as much as Blaze does, but a man in my position has to do anything to keep his empire.

My father left me in charge of the Russian mafia when he retired five years ago, and I’ve since made a name for myself. Then some motherfucker decided to double-cross me. I’ve never had so many cops randomly showing up at my business meetings until two weeks ago. Blaze and I have worked nonstop since then to find out who on my team thought it was a good fucking idea to betray me.

Going into my office, I take a seat behind my desk and take a deep breath. I don’t like anything messing with my routine or business. I’ve greased pockets in the police department, but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything. It might be time to make a couple of visits to some of NYPD’s finest. New York is my fucking city, and I plan on taking it back.

Blaze comes into my office and flops in the chair in front of my desk. “Done. What’s next on the list?”

I scrub a hand down my face. “Nothing until tomorrow. I need you ready for tonight.” Blaze has been with me for a long time. I pulled him off the streets when he was fourteen, and I was sixteen. I knew if I wanted anyone on my side, it would be him. He’s crazier than anyone I’ve ever met but loyal. My father was always gone, so he never said anything about me bringing in a feral as fuck fourteen-year-old.

“Why do I have to go?”

“You’re my bodyguard, Blaze. Where I go, you go.”

Blaze laughs. “Right. Because you can’t take care of yourself.”

“As far as they know, I’m just a businessman.”

“Kane, I hate to break it to you, but you look like the leader of the Russian Mafia.”

“Get out of my office. And be ready by nine.”

Blaze looks at his watch and jumps to his feet with a smile. “That means I can get a little playtime in.”

“Nine on the dot!” I yell at his retreating back as he shuts the door without acknowledgment. He’s the only one who would ever get away with that level of disrespect.

My phone rings, and I swipe to answer when I see my father’s name on the screen. “Hello?”

“Have you found them yet?”

“No, Papa. We’re working on it.”

“You need to strike first, Kane. If you sit on it too long, the empire I handed you will crumble beneath your feet.”

“I’m not sitting on it,” I grit out. “Blaze and I—”

“That’s your problem. Blaze is a psychopath who should be locked up somewhere, yet you trust him at your side. How do you know it’s not him?”

“Because there’s no fucking way that he would betray me.”

“Keep your friends close…” He trails off, leaving me to finish that thought. “Have you seen your sister lately?”

“Yes.”Have you?I keep that question to myself because I already know the answer. “I went to visit her yesterday.”

“I trust that she’s well?”
