The call disconnects, and I sit back in my chair. No matter how much I enjoy Jaxon’s company, I can’t take any chances. His story sounds legit, but he could be a really good liar.

I will find out soon enough if I need to kill him.

“Captain Carls,” I greet. He turns around from getting in his car, eyes wide. “We need to talk.”

“I’m busy, guys. Can this wait until later?” I came to find him as soon as we dropped off Elijah to find out what he knows. And from the sweat beading on his forehead, I’d say it’s a lot.

“I’m afraid it can’t.” I adjust my suit jacket, flashing my Glock in the process. “I suggest you get in the car.” I walk away without waiting to see if he follows. I know Blaze will take care of it if he decides to be an idiot.

I slide into the car and nod at Dalton when I’m in the seat. “I trust Jaxon got home okay?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“I’m going to need that address.”

“Yes, Sir.”

Blaze shoves Captain Carls into the car from the other side, then slides into the seat in front of him.

“I want to know why the fuck I have police officers crawling up my ass. I pay you so that doesn’t happen, but yet, every meeting that I’ve had for the last two weeks, one of your guys shows up.” I turn to face him. “Do we need to renegotiate?”

Carls swallows. “No. I mean, I don’t know what’s going on.”

“That’s bullshit,” Blaze says. “You have sweat beading on your upper lip, your breathing sped up, and you look seconds from puking. Tell him what he wants to know.” Blaze might need mental help, but he’s one of the most perceptive people I’ve met, and that makes him even more dangerous—even more reason to keep him at my side.

“Look, I’m being watched. I had to loosen up the leash for a little bit. I just need a couple more weeks.”

“I don’t have a couple of weeks. I have business to conduct, which doesn’t include interruptions. Fix it, or the next one I see is dead. After Blaze has his fun, I’ll make sure to deliver them to your house. Your wife and daughter wouldn’t appreciate that, yes?”

“I’ll do what I can, but—”

I hold my hand up to cut him off. “You have forty-eight hours. This was just a courtesy visit. The next won’t be. Get out of my car.”

He scrambles out, slamming the door behind him. Blaze looks at me with a raised brow. “You think he’s telling the truth?”

“No. Put surveillance on his wife and daughter. He needs to remember how far my reach goes.” Blaze pulls out his phone to do what I said, and I pull mine out for the fortieth time.

“Why don’t you text him?” Blaze says without looking up from his phone.

“What are you talking about?”

“You’ve checked your phone every five fucking minutes since he left this morning. It’s getting on my nerves, so text him.”

“That’s not what I was doing.”

Blaze looks up from his phone and leans back in the seat. “That’s bullshit. I know you, Kane, and he’s got you all fucked up.”

“I was waiting on Saint to message me.”

Blaze laughs. “You had Saint run him, didn’t you?”

“Of course I did.”

“So, you plan on seeing him again?”

“If he comes back clean, then yes.”
