The line goes dead, and I don’t know what to say. I know his phone is untraceable; they all are. I have to find a way to get to him and figure out what he wants with Kira. “Kane.” Jaxon rubs his hand down my cheek so I’ll look into his eyes. “What are you thinking?”

“I don’t know. I have no way to find him.” Blaze steps into my office with that crazy look in his eyes. At least it’s the good crazy. “We have to find him.”

“Agreed.” Blaze and Eli walk in and sit down in front of my desk. “How?”

“We will get Saint back in here.” I run my hand down my face, not wanting to say what I have to next. “He kept asking about Kira.”

“That asshole better not lay a finger on Kira,” Blaze growls, sitting up in his chair.

“She might be working with him, Blaze.”

“I don’t think she is,” Jaxon says. “Sorry. I don’t mean to jump into your conversation.”

“Don’t apologize,Litso kukly. You’re a part of this, too. Why do you think she isn’t?”

“You blame yourself for what happened. But it was your dad who ignored the threat, right?” I nod. “He’s the one who probably started shit with the other people, sent you and Blaze to stir it up, ignored the threat against you, stuck Kira in a rehab facility, and then just disappeared. Why would she help him after that?”

“Because it should have been me in that house. What better way to get me back than put me in prison?”

“Because I would never do that to you.” I look up at the sound of Kira’s voice, and she has tears streaming down her face. “I never blamed you because you were stuck just as much as I was. Our father is a fucking coward, and I’d lay down my life to protectyou.”

Jaxon slides from my lap so I can stand up. I walk to Kira and cup her poor, scarred cheeks. “I should have done a better job at protecting you.”

She grabs my wrists, holding me tight. “You did the best you could. Please believe me. I’m not helping him.”

My mind is at war with my heart. I never would have believed Jaxon was betraying me, much less my own goddamn father. Is it so much of a stretch that Kira would be? I’ve always had a blind spot when it came to her. Being sixteen years older, I watched her grow into the woman she is today; the one those assholes tried to take from me. “I’m trying, Kira. I have to have someone watch you until this is over. I can’t handle any more surprises.”

She smiles sadly through her tears. “I understand.” My heart breaks as she steps back out of my reach. “I’ll stay in the poolhouse. I won’t bother you up here anymore.”

“Kira!” I call out, but she’s already moving through the house. “Yebat.” I feel arms wrap around my waist from behind, and know it’s Jaxon without even looking. I slide my hands on top of his, and he squeezes harder.

“We’ll figure this out, Kane.”

We stay like that for a few minutes until I can get my shit together. I pat his hands, step away, and turn around. “Get Diego and Zuko here,” I order Blaze. “And get Saint the fuck back in here.”

I have a feeling after my conversation with my father that he’s not only helping the police, he’s helping Lev. Lev doesn’t have the kind of power it took to break into Diego’s estate to take Jaxon. But my father sure as fuck still does. He might have stepped down, but his name still carries a lot of weight. For whatever reason, my father is trying to bring me down by any means necessary.

It’s time to track down Lev and find out why.

“Saint. I want that information now.”

“I’m trying, Kane. He’s crawled into a goddamn hole. No one knows where he is.”

“I don’t have to remind you what happens to people that fail me, yes? Find him.”

“Yes, Sir.”

I keep pacing in my office, determined to find him today. Jaxon, Blaze, and Eli left me alone after I bit Blaze’s head off for no fucking reason. Not that I blame them. I’m on edge, and the slightest little thing is setting me off. Every once in a while, I see Saint cast nervous glances over his shoulder, waiting for me to blow his head off like I threatened to do two hours ago when he still hadn’t found anything.

Diego and Zuko showed up fifteen minutes after Blaze’s call, and they’ve been out searching ever since. They’ve interrogated everyone on Lev’s payroll, and they’ve all said the same thing. They had no idea what he planned for Jaxon, and they hadn’t seen him for over a week. The shipments, the extra manpower, the balls he finally grew, and his being able to hide from me all start adding up to one thing. My father is fucking bankrolling him. Saint’s computer dings and I’m behind him in a flash.

“Did you find something?”

“Jesus, Kane. Man, I’m going to say this with the utmost respect, but you’re scaring the shit out of me. When I have something, I swear to fuck, I’ll let you know.” I take in the sweat around the edges of his brown hair and the wide look in his green eyes. “It was just Diego checking in.”

“I need a drink.” I hear Saint mutter something like ‘Yes, you do’ under his breath and choose to ignore it. I go to the bar in the corner of the room and pour a glass of whiskey. I drink it fast and then pour another one.
