She starts inching toward us, and Kane catches the movement. “I’m going to eat your fucking heart for breakfast,” Kane says, keeping them distracted. “You really think you have the upper hand?”

Dalton gestures around. “It looks like it to me. And don’t worry about Zuko and Diego’s crew, I sent them into an ambush on your order. They are at least twenty minutes away by now. So fucking stupid to blindly follow you.”

Kira’s hand grazes my pant leg, feeling for the sheath. Her fingers brush across it, and she scoots closer, pulling it free. “Him first,” I whisper, nodding at Jaxon. His brows furrow, and I shake my head. “All hell is about to break loose. Get him free.”

She maneuvers it behind her, and I watch Jaxon’s shoulders relax, but he doesn’t move his hands now that they’re free. She moves toward me, and the guy swings around, aiming the gun right at her head. Kane bursts out of the chair, grabbing Dalton’s gun by the barrel. I kick out as hard as I can, knocking the gun away from Kira.

“My hands!” I yell, locking my legs around the guy’s neck. My arms come free, and I’m on my feet. Another guy comes at me head-on, knocking me backward. My head bounces off the wall, making black spots dance in my vision. Shots are being fired all around me, but I can’t get my eyes to focus. Kira cries out in pain, and I’ve never struggled so hard in my life. My vision comes back slowly just to see the guy bringing a gun to my forehead, and then he slumps over.

I look up at Jaxon and his chest heaving. Blood is dripping from his hands, and he has a knife clutched in his fist. My eyes flash to the guy, and his throat is hanging wide open. “We have to move!” Jaxon yells, reaching down and jerking me to my feet. “Dalton ran, and Kane took off after him.” We scramble, grabbing weapons. Jaxon pulls his vest off and slips it over Kira’s head. He bends down, scoops her beanie up, and gently places it on her head. He grabs her hand and pulls her behind him. “Stay behind us. Okay?” I hand her a Glock, and she grabs it in a tight grip.

“You see someone you don’t know, you shoot,” I instruct.

“Okay,” she replies in a shaky voice. I will gut these assholes for making her feel this kind of fear again.

We slowly walk to the door, and I see several dead bodies lying around. “How the hell?”

“Kane took out two, and I got three before I got to you,” Jaxon answers.Damn.

We walk out in a line with me on point, listening. Movement from the hallway catches our attention, and Jaxon and I swing our guns up, waiting. Zuko and Diego come skidding around the corner. “You guys good?” Zuko asks.

“I thought he sent you away,” I ask suspiciously.

Diego shakes his head. “He tried, but something seemed off. We made him think we left and sent some of our guys.”

“Did you see Kane?” Jaxon asks, never lowering his gun.

“No,” Diego answers.

“Where were you guys then?” Jaxon pushes. “You should have heard the shots.”

“We were sitting on Lev. We found him hiding in some crawl space. What’s going on?”

Jaxon exchanges a look with me, and I see him struggling like me to believe them. Dalton was cleared a long time ago, even though I still had my suspicions, but I don’t trust many people to begin with, so I ignored it. Now look where we are. “We need to find Kane,” I finally say. I gesture with my gun for them to walk ahead of us. I need to keep an eye on them because I’m not risking Jaxon or Kira. I take one step and freeze. If they got Kira, they could have gotten Eli. I jerk my phone from my pocket, and it goes straight to voicemail.

“What’s wrong, Blaze?” Kira asks.

“Eli.” I dial again and get the same thing. “We need to finish this.”

“I’m sure Eli’s fine,” Jaxon soothes, but I can hear the quiver in his voice. “He was inside with a bunch of guards.”

“If they got past them to grab Kira, they could have grabbed him. Let’s move.”

We move at a fast clip down the hallway, listening for any signs of Kane. We finally hear his voice rising and run up the stairs. Kane has Dalton down on the floor, yelling in Russian and beating the shit out of him. Dalton’s body is bloody and slumped on the floor.

“Kane,” Jaxon says, walking toward him. Kane swings wild black eyes to him and goes back to hitting Dalton. “Kane, I think he’s dead.”

I let Kane get a few more hits in before I walk forward and grab his arm. He jumps to his feet, grabs a gun from his waistband, and sticks it against my chest. “Whoa there, Big Poppa. It’s just me.” Kane’s eyes focus, and he jerks me into a hug.

“I thought you were dead.”

“Pssht, they can’t kill me.”

Kane pushes me away and jerks Jaxon and Kira against his chest. “Fuck,” Kane breathes.

“It’s over,” Jaxon says.

Kane pulls away and looks at Dalton. I see the anger settle over him again, and he aims the Glock, emptying the clip into Dalton. His body jerks with the shots, but he was long dead before Kane pulled the trigger. “Now it is.”
