“Doc is two minutes out,” Kane relays. “You’re doing good,Litso kukly.”

“He’s lost too much goddamn blood. He needs a hospital,” Jaxon barks.

“Doc is bringing everything we need here,” Kane soothes. “We can’t go anywhere right now.”

“Come on, come on,” Jaxon chants, checking for a pulse. He shakes his head when he can’t find one.

My heart sinks to my stomach, and I slide down the wall to the floor. Saint has always been so good to us, and he just saved my life.

Now he might die for his loyalty.

CHAPTER40

KANE

Iwatch helplessly as Doc rushes into the room. Blaze and Jaxon have worked on Saint for too long with no change.

“We need to bag him,” Doc orders. “Blaze, continue compressions.”

Blaze nods and focuses on his task. I slip past them and sit beside Eli on the floor. He crawls into my lap, curling against my chest. Jaxon moves to the side, and Doc starts pulling supplies from his bag. He snaps on gloves, tilts Saint’s head back, and starts sliding a tube down his throat with Jaxon helping. Doc secures the tube and puts a bag on the end that he instructs Jaxon to squeeze.

Doc starts pulling out needles, syringes, vials, and several other things. “He’s got a puncture wound on his right side,” Jaxon informs. “It was bleeding really bad.”

Doc pulls out scissors and cuts Saint’s shirt open. When he spreads it apart, he whistles. “Kane, can you put pressure on this? I need to get his heart pumping again, then I’ll worry about this.”

I kiss Eli’s forehead and slide him off my lap. I push the gauze that Doc hands me against the wound and close my eyes. Too much shit is swirling in my head. Everything keeps hitting me left and right, making me so fucking tired.

Doc slaps pads on Saint’s chest, turns on a machine, and applies a blood pressure cuff. He inserts an IV, gets a syringe ready, and pulls something into it. I meet Blaze’s eyes, and he’s thinking the same thing as me. Saint might not make it out of this. “He protected Eli,” Blaze says, still doing compressions. “One of those motherfuckers tried to rape him.”

My head whips to Eli, and he smiles sadly. “He didn’t get far, and I’m fine.”

We watch Doc pump different things into Saint’s IV, and my eyes go to the machine that will show his heartbeat if we ever get it back. “Kane,” Doc says cautiously. “He needs a hospital. I don’t know for sure, but he looks like he has massive internal injuries. I can’t take care of that here.” The machine beeps several times; Doc knocks Blaze’s hands away. “We have a pulse, but it’s weak. I need to know what you want to do now.” I almost wilt into the floor. I might have been mad at Saint because he didn’t dig far enough into Jaxon, but he’s been a part of this family since I took over. Losing him would be like losing a brother. Hospitals cause complications, and that’s not something that I can risk right now. I’m still not sure who all was working against me. Everyone looks like the enemy, and I’m finding it hard to trust anyone. “Kane, I need an answer.”

“I’ll go with him,” Blaze offers. “So he won’t be alone.”

I nod, and Doc pulls out his phone to call nine-one-one. He rattles off everything wrong and gives the address. Doc tapes a big gauze pad over the wound so I can move my hands, and I fall back onto my ass. I feel like I’ve failed as a leader, a lover, a boss, a brother, and a friend. I’ve put all these people in danger because of my fucking ego. I was so convinced that I could find the enemy from a mile away. But I never considered Dalton, my own guards that he flipped to his payroll, and I let Jaxon past my defenses.

I get up and rush from the room, ignoring them calling out my name. I go straight to my office, locking the door behind me. I start pacing like a caged animal, raking my fingers through my hair. With a roar of rage, I flip my desk, knock over my bookshelves, and flip the bar table. Someone is pounding on the door, yelling my name, but I can’t face them right now. I fucked up, and I have to pay for my mistakes.

I don’t deserve this empire.

* * *

Several hours later, I find myself in my room. I haven’t seen anyone since I destroyed my office, and all I know is Blaze went with Saint to the hospital. It still wasn’t looking good when they left, and Doc said that he wasn’t entirely sure if Saint was going to make it.

Zuko and Diego took it upon themselves to set up protection here with their crews because most of my guards were dead or locked up downstairs until I figured out what to do with them. Someone cleaned up the bodies at some point, and for that, I’m grateful. Some of the guys had been with me for fucking years.

Lev is still rotting down there, too, because I don’t have it in me to do anything about it. He can starve to death for all I fucking care.

“Kane.” I close my eyes at Jaxon’s voice. “You want to talk?”

I take a sip of my scotch and shake my head. “No.” He walks into the room anyway and sits on the edge of the bed.

“None of this is your fault.”

“The fuck it isn’t,” I bark. “I should have known—”

“Known what? That I was undercover? That Dalton was a traitor? That Eli was going to get hurt? That Kira was going to get grabbed? That Saint was going to get stabbed? You’re damn good at this job, Kane, but you aren’t all-knowing. No one could have guessed this shit.”
