Like a date?

Yes.

Should I wear a fancy dress?

Funny. Casual is fine.

I’ll be ready.

Here’s to hoping that Jaxon Lennox won’t be my demise.

CHAPTER4

BLAZE

Ifollow Kane into the meeting, my eyes going everywhere. I’ve been with Kane for years, and we’ve never had an issue with the police. They’re paid good and threatened even better. We’ve interrogated everyone on Kane’s payroll, and the ones that stood out I dealt with. Just like I always do. Kane saved my life, and I’ll do everything to make sure he stays safe.

“Gentlemen,” Kane says to the room. He sits at the head of the table, and I take my place against the wall behind him. “There’s no easy way to say this, but we have a traitor among us.” I watch the three faces closely for any indication that they might be the goddamn rat. “I’ve gone through my men, disposed of the ones that needed it, so that leaves someone sitting at this table or someone in your ranks.”

Zuko Shen, leader of the Triad, sits forward. “A traitor?”

“That’s what I said, yes?” Kane replies. “Do you have anything to add to that, or will you just repeat what I say?” I have to choke back a laugh at that. Kane won’t be happy if I start giggling like a girl right now.

Kane worked hard to make these alliances, something his father could never do. So far, he has Zuko for the Triads, Diego Marino for the Italians, and Lev Sokolov for a smaller faction of Russians. There are many more, but if anyone can come to a peace agreement, it’s Kane. New York is still his city, but he allows the others to do as they please as long as it doesn’t interrupt his business.

“I don’t know what this has to do with us. This sounds like a you problem,” Lev says, sitting up in his chair feigning confidence. But I saw his eyes shift to me. All Kane has to do is give me the signal, and this motherfucker’s brains will be sprayed all over the wall.

“This has to do with all of us,” Kane barks. “You forget I gave you your territory, and I can take it away. You wouldn’t have shit if it wasn’t for me. I suggest you sit back in your chair and listen.”Fuck.That shouldn’t turn me on, but here I am, willing my dick to go down. Kane’s always had that effect on me. Hell, all he has to do is look at me the wrong way, and I’m ready for him to bend me over the closest surface. “I had a meeting with Captain Carls today, and he was less than helpful. I think someone else has gotten to him, which spells trouble for us all. Not just me.”

“What can we do?” Diego asks.Smart man.Out of the three, Diego seems like the least likely suspect. He was truly appreciative when we gave him his territory. I would know since he thanked me repeatedly for days by joining me in my playroom. It’s the first time Elijah topped anyone. It was a damn good time.

“Watch your backs. Talk to your contacts. Tighten your ranks. And don’t hesitate to kill someone if they look the least bit suspicious. I don’t have to tell you what will happen if I find out one of you is leaking information.” Kane looks at his watch. “You’re dismissed. Diego, stay behind.”

The other two make their way out, and Kane looks at Diego. “I need you to keep an eye on Lev.”

Diego nods. “You think that it’s him?”

“He’s the weakest link. It’s either him or someone on his team.”

“And if I see anything?”

“Call Blaze,” Kane answers. “He’ll take care of it.”

Diego glances at me then back to Kane. “I wanted to talk to you about something.” Kane nods for him to continue. “I need more room. My ranks are growing—”

Kane raises his hand to cut him off. “You’re damn good at what you do, Diego. Help me with this, and you can have your pick. And if it is Lev, you can have his land and whatever comes with it.”

“Thank you.” Diego stands from his chair, and his gaze meets mine. I raise a brow and grin when he blushes. “Let me know if there is anything else I can do.”

He leaves the room, and I flop in the chair beside Kane. “Will you stop fucking with him?”

“Nope,” I reply. “It’s just too much fun. What next?”

Kane massages his temples. “Do you have eyes on Carls’ family?”

“Carter is there as we speak. He knows the drill.” I lean forward and cross my arms on the table. “Do you think now is a good time to get involved with Jaxon?” I don’t want to admit it, but I’m jealous that Kane seems so taken with Jaxon. He always has me available, but he cut me off cold out of the blue. We spent years fucking around, and Kane is the one who helped me with what I was feeling when I realized women held no appeal to me. My mom died when I was eleven from an overdose, and my dad was never in the picture. I spent three years on the streets, avoiding child services because I refused to go to a foster home. Then Kane found me when I was fourteen and took me in. “Just with everything going on…”

“Saint said he came back clean. I don’t think Jaxon is a double agent.”
