“I missed you too. Did Papa call?” She shakes her head, and a muscle starts ticking in his jaw. “He said he was.”

“It’s okay, Kane. I’ve learned not to expect anything from him. Let’s sit.” She leads us over to a sitting area, and Kane pulls me to sit beside him, lacing our fingers together. She catches the movement, and a small smile crosses her lips. “So you two are…?”

“Together,” Kane answers.

She tucks her legs under her and looks every bit like the nosey little sister. From what I understand, Kira was born sixteen years after Kane, making her twenty-one, and Kane’s mom died from childbirth. His dad has apparently remarried several times after that. “Like together, together?”

“Yes, Kira. Jaxon is mine.”

Kira locks eyes on me, and I do everything I can not to stare too hard at her face, but I don’t want to drop my eyes either. She tilts her head to the side. “You’re too pretty for my brother.”

“It’s more like a sympathy thing, really. I felt bad because he couldn’t find anyone else,” I joke, making her giggle. Kane growls low in his throat, and it makes me laugh because he knows damn well that I find him sexier than sin.

“I get that. It’s hard, but someone has to do it.”

“I mean, he’s nice enough, so it isn’t that hard.”

“If you two are done,” Kane says dryly. “I wanted to ask Kira something.” She waves her hand for him to continue. “Are you ready to come home?”

She shakes her head and twists her hands in her lap. “I’m not, Kane. I still have a lot to work through. You know this.”

“I hate that you’re here alone.”

“I’m not alone. I’ve made friends while I’ve been here.”

“What about your family?”

“Who? You and Blaze? Dad doesn’t give a shit about me, and this isn’t about you.”

“I didn’t—” I squeeze Kane’s thigh, and he relaxes back on the couch.

“This should be her decision, Kane. I don’t know what’s going on, but you can’t take that away from her.” Kira gives me a shocked look, and then her eyes flash to Kane, probably waiting for him to blow up.

Kane pinches the bridge of his nose. “You’re right. When you’re ready, you promise that you’ll tell me?”

“You know I will. I just need…time. This place helps me without the reminders of what happened.”

“I’m so sorry, Kira,” Kane says hoarsely.

She leans forward and grabs his hand. “This isn’t your fault, remember?”

“If I would have gotten there—”

“Kane, stop. You had no idea what was going to happen, and neither did I. There were so many things that could have been changed that day. But in the end, we can’t go back and fix it. All I can do is move forward.”

What she said hits closer to home than what either of them realizes. There’s so much in my past that I wish I could go back and change. But since I can’t, I need to start figuring out what my future looks like.

Kira steers the conversation to a safer subject, and we get caught up in a conversation talking about our favorite TV shows. I can feel Kane’s eyes on me the whole time, and I don’t know if he’s waiting for me to fuck up and ask about the scars or what. I finally glance at him, and the look on his face takes my breath away. He’s looking at me like I’m the only person in the room. I give him what I hope is a confident smile and tune back into my conversation with Kira. She’s so easy to talk to and totally different from her brother. The more she talks, the more her personality comes out, and I can’t help but like her.

And that damns me even more with the path that I’m walking down.

CHAPTER18

BLAZE

It didn’t surprise me that Kane and Jaxon got back together so fast. What surprised me was Kane took Jaxon to meet Kira.

He’s highly protective of her, and given what happened, it shocked me. I’ve always thought of Kira as a little sister, and I go to see her whenever I can with Elijah. That should have been my first clue that he was more to me than a plaything. But like the asshole I am, I had to find out the hard way.
