I found the first real love of my life.

And now I have to kill him.

CHAPTER21

JAXON

“Who needs this much shit?” I grouch to my lawyer. We just finished reviewing everything for my father’s estate, and the whole thing is getting on my nerves. I never even knew the man, so why he left me his fortune still doesn't make sense.

My lawyer chuckles and snaps his briefcase close. “You’ve met all his requirements, so I’ll release the funds in the next twenty-four hours. All the information is in the packet I gave you.”

I stand when he does and shake his hand. “Thank you.”

“If you need me for anything, don’t hesitate to call.”

When he leaves the room, I sit at the conference table and pull the information from the packet. There’s a list of houses, properties, and more zeroes than I know what to do with. Maybe I’ll talk to Kane and see what he thinks I should do.

Thinking of Kane, my hand automatically goes to the collar he placed there last night. I’ve never felt this way in my goddamn life. Kane, Blaze, and Eli are what I never even knew I needed in life. Kane blew into my life, and he hasn’t let go. I know how much this collar means to him, and I’m going to do everything that I can to make sure he knows how much it means to me.

The past several days have been a whirlwind. The punishment from Blaze is also at the forefront of my mind. All it took was one word, and everything stopped. They made sure that I knew I was safe, taken care of, and chased away the demons from my past. I was so lost to the pleasure and the feel of him even though I couldn’t see him. The fact that he was so upset that I left showed that Blaze really does care. No matter how he shows it. What he did for me upstairs after is what sticks out the most. It’s the first time that I think I actually saw the real Blaze without all the voices. I’m just glad I can also help keep them away.

I shove all the contents into the packet and go outside to wait for my Uber. It took me forever to convince Kane that I could take one because I know he needs Dalton more than I do. I slide into the backseat and head toward my apartment. I need to grab a few things, and then I’m going back to Kane’s. I need to feel his arms around me. I need to show him I’m taking this as seriously as he is.

I unlock my apartment door and toss the packet on the table. I feel a presence before I see it and turn toward the living room. Kane is sitting in the big chair with a look on his face I’ve never seen aimed at me. Anger.

“Hey,” I say. “What are you doing here?”

Kane twirls something around in his hand before his eyes land on me. “Waiting for you.”

I walk further into the living room. “I was grabbing a few things before I came back to you. Is something wrong?” Kane’s entire body is tense, his eyes are dark, and he looks ready to explode.

“I don’t know, Jaxon. You tell me.”Jaxon? He never calls me that. Something about it makes my stomach fill with dread. I stop walking when I’m standing in front of him.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

Kane explodes from the chair, and his hand goes to my throat. He lays it there, placing his fingers over my pulse point. “I had Saint look into your stepfather. He’s still alive in North Carolina.”

“Okay,” I say slowly. “Is that why you're so pissed off?”

Kane bares his teeth, and it’s the first time I’ve ever truly been scared of him. “No. That’s not why I’m so pissed off.” His hand tightens on my neck. “I found out something else today.”

Realization dawns on me. I try to move back, but his hand turns into a vice, holding me in place. “What are you doing?” I don’t even have to push fear into my voice because he’s scaring the shit out of me.

“You know what else I found out?” He pushes into my face. “That you’re a traitor and a goddamn liar. Was any of it real?”

“Kane…”

Kane spins and pushes my face against the wall. He braces his forearm against the back of my neck, holding me there. He presses into my back with his mouth beside my ear. “Was any of it real, JaxonSmoak?” As soon as that name leaves his lips, I know I’m as good as dead. No matter what I tell him right now, he won’t believe me. But I have to try because things have changed since I first met him.

“Kane, we can talk about this.”

“You’re a goddamn cop!” Kane yells, pushing harder. “You thought you could take me down? The only thing you did was get yourself killed.” I close my eyes and slump against the wall. “After every fucking thing, you turned out to be the worst traitor of them all. I pledged my loyalty to you, and you threw it back in my face.”

“Please, let me explain.” I don’t care that I’m begging. I need him to know that I planned on going tomorrow to turn in my badge and tell them that I am done. Kane might be a criminal, and he goes against everything that I was taught to believe, but I’ve learned through my time with him that he would burn down this world for the ones that he loves, and that includes me. I’ve found a family with him, Blaze, and Eli.

“There’s nothing left to explain.” I feel the cool metal of the barrel of a gun press against my temple. “I shared my life with you. I let you meet mysister.I put my collar around your goddamn neck. You were just meant to be my fuck toy, Jaxon. Something pretty I could play with when I got bored. Now you’ve dug yourself into my fucking brain, and I find out you’re working against me. I have no choice but to end you. You know too much.”

“Kane,” I plead. “I haven’t told them anything.”
