“Kill who?”

“Jaxon.”

What the fuck? I grab his hands. “Why do they say you have to kill Jaxon?” I thought everything was great between them. What happened that I don’t know about?

“He’s a traitor, and he has to die.”

Blaze jerks his hands from mine and strides from the room. I scramble after him and catch up to his long strides when he gets to the living room. I grab his arm. “Blaze. Stop. Tell me what’s going on.”

Blaze whirls around on me. “Did you know?”

“Know what?”

“That Jaxon is a fucking cop.”

My heart sinks to my stomach, but my immediate reaction is denial. “There’s no way, Blaze. I’ve seen him with you and Kane. I see the way he is with me. There’s no damn way he’s a cop.”

“We have proof! Saint dug into his background. He’s been playing us the whole fucking time.” Blaze picks up a vase from the end table and slings it at the TV. They both shatter, making me jump. “He made Kane fall in love with him just to rip his heart out. Now, I’m going to rip Jaxon’s fucking throat out.”

“Blaze. Listen to me.” I can hear the quiver in my voice and try to hide it. My heart is breaking because I’m starting to fall in love with Jax. But I need to be strong for Blaze. “If he’s a cop, and you kill him, they’ll put you in jail. If he’s undercover, you know they’re keeping a close eye on him.”

Blaze starts pacing, running his hands through his hair, and muttering under his breath. I know he’s talking to the voices, which scares me even more. “I can sneak past them and take him out before they see me.” I know he’s not talking to me anymore, and I have no clue what to do. Kane is usually the one I run to when he gets like this. “I need to slit his throat and watch the life drain from his eyes. I need him tofeelthe pain of what he’s done to this family.” He nods like he’s agreeing with someone. “There’s a fire escape right beside his window. I’ll go tonight.”

“Blaze, where’s Kane?” He continues to pace, not hearing a word I’m saying. “Blaze?”

“What?!” Blaze yells, spinning around to face me. “Shit. I’m sorry, Sweetheart.”

“It’s okay. Where’s Kane?”

“He went to talk to Jaxon.”

“Alone?”

Blaze frowns. “Yeah. Why?”

“How long has he been gone?”

“I don’t know. An hour? What are you getting at?”

“Blaze,” I say slowly. “What happens to people who cross Kane?”

“They die.”

“Kane will never be able to live with himself if he kills Jaxon.”

“Kane will do what he has to do to prove he can run this family. Including killing that fucking traitor.”

“There has to be a good reason for it. I’ve seen Jaxon when he looks at Kane and you. He loves you, and that’s something you can’t fake.”

“It doesn’t matter.” Blaze pulls the Glock from his holster, checks the clip, and slaps it back into place. “They said I have to, or they won’t leave me alone.”

“They aren’t real,” I say quietly. “Listen to me, I’m real. You can’t give in to the voices and hurt Jaxon no matter what he’s done. We need to find Kane, talk to Jaxon, and come up with a plan that doesn’t include killing him.” I pull my phone from my pocket and dial Kane. It rings several times before going to voicemail. I keep calling until Kane finally picks up. “Thank fuck. Where are you?”

“Jaxon’s.” Kane’s voice comes out rough and robotic. “He betrayed me, Eli. He betrayedus.”

“I need you to come home to us, Kane. You need to hear him out.”

“It’s too late.”
