“Blaze,” Kane cuts in. “Let him go. He’s affected by this too.” Kane turns to me. “You go with Dalton. Straight there and back,Dragotsennyy.”

I jerk a nod, pull the door open, and march to the limo. I can feel Blaze’s eyes on me and know I’m going to pay for that. Dalton comes out minutes later, and we ride into Diego’s territory in silence. When we pull in front of his house, he’s waiting for me. He opens the door and leans on it. “Kane said you wanted to see the traitor.”

I push out of the limo and brush past him. “Stop calling him that.”

“Are you sure you didn’t just come to see me, Eli?”

I stop in my tracks and turn around. “First of all, that was a one-time thing. Second of all, you better never say something like that in front of Blaze. Now, take me to Jaxon.”

Diego’s face pales slightly at the mention of Blaze, and I have to contain a laugh. He leads me into his house and down a hallway. He unlocks the door and sweeps his arm out for me to enter. Jaxon is curled up in the bed, and I can see his shoulders shaking. “Kane told me not to leave you alone with him, but I feel like you need time. I’ll be right outside the door if you need anything.”

I wait until Diego shuts the door before I walk to the bed. “Jax?” When he rolls over, he has tears rolling down his face.

“I fucked up so bad, Eli.”

I sit on the edge of the bed. “Why don’t you start from the beginning?”

I wait until Jaxon gets himself under control. When he does, he slides to sit against the headboard with a resigned look on his face. “I grew up in North Carolina with my mom until I was four. That’s when she married my stepdad. He hated me on sight but never showed it in front of my mom. Anyway, when I was five, he started pushing me around. When I turned seven, he started with the belt. That went on until he left. My mom tried, but she worked two jobs to support us and was never there. I started getting into trouble in my early teens, and one cop sat me down. He told me that I could make a better life for myself if I straightened up. He helped me improve my grades and enrolled me in the police academy when I was old enough.” Jaxon swallows, and tears start to well in his eyes again. “I got a call shortly after that my real father left me his entire estate, and I needed to come to New York to settle it. I transferred here, and I was approached right after I graduated by Captain Carls. He said this would boost my career if I could bring someone like Kane Lyubava down along with his empire.”

Jaxon’s hand absently goes to his neck, and that’s when I notice that his collar is gone. “I was told I needed to infiltrate him in whatever way was possible. That’s when they came up with the idea of me going to that Charity ball to see if I could catch Kane’s eye. You know what happened after that.”

“What happened today? I thought he killed you,” I finish with a whisper. That thought still scares the shit out of me, and it’s still very much on the table.

“He almost did.” Jaxon’s bottom lip starts to quiver, and I reach out to grab his hand. He looks at it in surprise, then laces his fingers with mine. “I went back to the apartment to grab a few things. I had already decided to turn in my badge, and Kane, putting his collar on me, sealed the deal. He took it and said I was nothing to him now. He pulled the trigger, but the bullet went above my head. It was just a warning. After that, he hauled me out of my apartment, told me to act like nothing was wrong just in case we were being watched, and brought me here.”

“Jaxon, I’m not saying what you did isn’t fucked up because it is. Kane is head over heels in love with you, and you broke his heart. I don’t think that was your intention, and that’s the only reason I’m here. You just need to give him time. If you push him, hewillkill you. If Blaze doesn’t get to you first.”

“I can’t lose any of you, Eli. Blaze and I were starting something special. I feel like you and I already have. You guys are my life now. I want to make this right.”

“Stay here and don’t argue with what he wants. I know Diego is under strict instructions to keep you safe. If Kane was done with you, you’d be dead, or he’d leave you alone to deal with all this shit coming down on his head.” I stand from the bed and kiss Jaxon’s forehead. I’m more than pissed at him, but I also feel this pull to put everything back together. “I need to get back to Blaze.”

“How bad is it?”

“Bad,” I say honestly. “I’m hoping Kane can calm him down. If I can, I’ll come back and see you. Until then, be patient.”

Jaxon nods and slides to lay back down, curling into a ball.

One way or another, I’m fixing this mess.

CHAPTER23

BLAZE

Kill him.

Kill him.

Kill him.

Those two words are like a constant chant in my head. They haven’t stopped yelling since the moment the words left Saint’s mouth.

How could we have been so stupid? In this life, you’re trained from a young age to be able to spot this shit. Jaxon not only fooled Kane, he fooled me and Eli. The thought that I even let that motherfucker touch my Pet makes my blood boil.

Kill him.

Kill him.

Kill him.
