“One where I didn’t have to look at you every day.”

“You’re fucking hilarious,” he says dryly, and my lips twitch. “We need to take off in a few minutes. Marco will be here with you.”

I nod. “Okay.”

“I talked to Kane this morning.” I raise a brow. “He’s a little less aggressive. That’s a good sign.”

“You don’t have to do that. I know how this story ends.”

“Jesus fuck, Jaxon. If he wanted you dead, you would be. He wouldn’t be hiding you out at my compound to make sure nothing happens to you. Get that through your thick fucking head.”

I sling my fork down. “All you’re doing is giving me hope that one day he won’t see me as a traitor, and he’ll see me as his again.”

“I talked to him about you, and he didn’t tell me to fuck off this time when I brought it up. You’ll get back there.” One of Diego’s guards walks into the room, and he stands. “Do something today instead of hiding in your room. You have full access to the house. Use it.”

As soon as I hear the front door shut, I get out of my chair and go back to my room. I groan when I see the note on the door and rip it off.

I told you to stay the fuck out of your room.

P.S. I locked you out.

Sincerely,

The resident asshole

“Fuck you, Diego.”

With nothing else to do, I wander around the house. It’s not as big as Kane’s, but I could still get lost in here. I find the movie room and curl up in one of the chairs. Finding the remote, I aimlessly flip through channels until I find something vaguely interesting. I get through three episodes when I start dozing off. Memories of Kane, Blaze, and Elijah start assaulting me left and right.

I’m jerked back to the present when I feel someone grab my arm. My eyes flash open, and I come face-to-face with someone I’ve never seen before.

“Who are you?” I say, trying to pull my arm free.

“Shut up,” he hisses. I don’t have a chance to react before his fist smashes into my face.

Knocking me out cold.

* * *

I slowly open my eyes and slam them back closed. My head is pounding, and my arms hurt. I take stock of everything, and the guy knocking me out comes back. My arms are tied above my head, and my toes are barely touching the ground. I slowly peel one eye open and see that I’m in nothing but my boxers. What the fuck?

“Quit pretending to be asleep.” That accent is slightly Russian and doesn’t sound nearly as sexy as Kane’s. “Wake up!”

Something slaps my face, and my eyes spring open. The guy in front of me is short, balding, with beady eyes. “Who are you?”

“Who I am doesn’t matter. Who you are does matter.”

I reign in the sarcastic comment since I’m not in the position to talk shit. “Okay. Why?”

“You’re important to Kane.” Even in this situation, my heart still aches at the mention of his name. “He needs to know he doesn’t run this city.”

“I don’t mean shit to Kane.”

“You’re his little prize. He’s been showing you off all over the city.”He was.

“We broke up.”

“Then why was he hiding you at Diego’s?” He starts pacing in front of me. “Kane has to pay for what he’s done.”
