He doesn’t need you.

“Let him go, Lev, or I’ll—”

“You’ll what? I finally have you by the balls, Kane. Give me what I want, or I send you Jaxon’s head in a goddamn box.”

The guy at the computer spins it around, and a red dot is blinking on the screen. “Send that to me,” I whisper and ramble off my number. Kane nods, indicating that he knows.

“You’ve got a deal. Now, where’s Jaxon?”

“That’s not how this is going to work. Wire the money, sign over Lyubava’s, and I’ll tell you where to get him.” The line goes dead, and we’re moving toward the door.

“Diego, get as many men as you can,” Kane barks. “That motherfucker doesn’t walk out of there alive.”

Diego nods and starts giving orders. We slide into the back of the sedan, and Dalton takes off. Dalton is more than just Kane’s driver. He’s highly trained and more than ready to find Jaxon.

My hands are shaking so badly that I tuck them under my legs so Kane won’t see. What if this is what Kane needs to finally take me out? What if this is all a setup? Is this how I die?

“Blaze.” My head whips to Kane’s voice, and I see the worry all over his face. “I can’t lose him.”

“I know. We’ll get him back, Kane.”

Kane’s entire body is vibrating with rage, and I can see that he’s barely hanging onto his temper. “When I get my hands on Lev, I’m going to rip his goddamn head off with my bare hands. Dalton, ETA?”

“Four minutes, Boss.”

“Go faster!” Kane’s temper finally hits its peak, and he looks ready to rip this car apart. “I could have run there faster.”

“Yes, Boss.” The car accelerates even faster than it’s already going, taking curves at breakneck speeds.

Kane and I start strapping on various weapons. When I see Kane pull out the machete, I know shit’s going to get bloody fast. He hasn’t used it in a long time, and I’m ashamed to admit how much it excites me to see it. “Lev is mine,” Kane growls when Dalton whips into the lot about a mile from where they’re hiding Jaxon. Diego and his team screech in behind us. We shove out of the car, and I spin my favorite knives around in my hands.

Lev stepped over a line taking Jaxon no matter how pissed we are at him. This is going to be a lesson that people will talk about for years to come, and we’re doing it all with our bare goddamn hands. Kane starts barking orders, and everyone falls into line without a second thought. I haven’t seen Kane this pissed since we went after the guys that hurt Kira. I’ve never seen so much blood until that day. Kane and I did that together, without any backup, as a team.

You aren’t a team.

He uses you.

He’ll lock you up when he gets Jaxon back.

“Shut up!” I yell, and several guys give me nervous glances. Kane’s brows furrow and I shake my head, indicating I wasn’t talking to him.

Kane dismisses everyone and turns to me. “Blaze, I need your head on straight.”

“It is.”

“You just told the voices in your fucking head to shut up out loud. If you can’t handle—”

“I can handle it. Let’s move.” Before I can answer, a blacked-out SUV pulls into the lot. “Who the fuck is that?”

“I called in more reinforcements,” Diego answers. The passenger side door opens, and Zuko Shen steps out with several members of the Triad. They’re heavily armed and look ready for anything.

“I’ll ask what the fuck is going on later,” Kane says. “Let’s go.”

We start moving at a fast clip toward the warehouse, and my heart is pounding in my chest. We have to get Jaxon back safely and in one piece. No matter what the voices are saying, I need him in my life, but more importantly, Kane needs him. I silently vow that I’m going to do just that or die trying.

We pop around the side of the building, and Kane swings the machete before the guy guarding the door has a chance to react. It slices straight through his neck, and Kane keeps moving. Six more guards are standing around the front, and I grin when one of them spots me. His eyes widen, and he grabs for the walkie on his belt.

“Not today, asshole.” I run at him, pull my knives up, cross my arms, and jerk them across his neck. It slices through his jugular, and blood squirts all over me, soaking my shirt. Something flashes in my mind like a memory, but I brush it off. We easily run through the rest of the guards and make it to the front door.
