“Enough,” Kane growls. “I can’t do this right now. I just found the man that I love almost beaten to death. I can’t deal with you and your voices right now.”

At the mention of those, I notice one thing. I don’t hear them at all anymore. Not even anything in the background. It’s completely silent for the first time in my life, and I know it’s because of the man in my arms.

Too bad I won’t be around to thank him.

CHAPTER27

ELIJAH

I’ve paced a hole in this floor, waiting for word about Jaxon. I’ve never wished so hard in my life that they bring him back home. We need him whether Blaze and Kane want to admit it or not. My phone pings with a message, and I take a second to gather myself before I look at it. With a deep breath, I pull up Kane’s chat screen.

Kane

We have him, but it’s bad. Prepare my room and let Doc know we’re on our way.

Blaze?

Even worse.

I run to Kane’s room, yelling for Doc on the way. My mind is going a million miles a minute with thoughts of Jaxon and Blaze. I’ve never seen Blaze like he was this morning or for the past couple of weeks. He’s always been able to fight the voices so they don’t control his life. He’s never looked so lost before or lost moments in time. Blaze is known for his blind fits of rage but always remembers them.

I’m putting the last touches on Kane’s bed so Jaxon is comfortable when I hear them come in. Footsteps sound on the stairs, and then Blaze is rounding the corner with a limp, bloody Jaxon in his arms. I slap a hand over my mouth to keep the sound in, but tears fill my eyes.

“Is he—”

“He’s alive,” Blaze answers, his voice soft. “Kane gave him a sedative in the car. We need to get him cleaned up so we can find the wounds.” Blaze goes straight to the bathroom with me right on his heels. “Will you run the bath? I want to do it when he can’t feel it.”

I step around Blaze and turn the water on. “Where’s Kane?”

“Downstairs making plans.” Blaze sits heavily on the side of the tub. “It was Lev. The motherfucker got away.”

“What?” I run my fingers over Jaxon’s sweaty forehead, careful with the cut on his cheek. “Why?”

“It’s a long story.” I don’t like the defeated look in Blaze’s eyes, but I’m afraid to push him, especially with how he’s clutching onto Jaxon.

We sit in silence until the bathtub is filled to the top. Blaze stands, and I help him get Jaxon’s bloody boxers off. Blaze steps into the tub, fully clothed, and eases into the water. Jaxon’s body goes rigid, but he doesn’t open his eyes. I strip to my boxers and get in, sitting in front of them. I grab a washcloth and gently start cleaning Jaxon off, starting with his face. I work my way down his chest, abs, and legs.

“I need to look at his back,” I say softly.

Blaze shakes his head. “I can’t let him go.”

“You can still hold him,” I soothe when I see the panicked look on Blaze’s face. “Just turn him around.”

“It hurts him too badly.”

“Blaze—”

“I said no!” Blaze’s voice echoes around the bathroom, causing me to flinch. “Do what you need to, but I’m not moving him.”

“Okay.” I lean over so I can look around Blaze’s arm, and I see cuts all over Jaxon’s back. “He’s going to need stitches and x-rays, Blaze. He needs a hospital.”

“Absolutely not,” Blaze argues. “He doesn’t leave my goddamn sight. You’re trying to take him from me.”

I jerk back, shocked. “Blaze, I would never do that. I’m just saying he needs more than we can do here.”

“Figure it out,” Blaze hisses. “Are you done?”

I swallow the emotion clogging my throat. “Yes. Doc is waiting in the room.”
