“I’m taking him to mine.” Blaze gently stands from the water, and Jaxon whimpers even in sleep.

“Kane said—”

“I don’t care. Kane isn’t going to take him from me either.”

“Blaze, what’s going on?” I scramble out behind him when he gets out of the tub, grabbing a towel for Jaxon. He marches from the bathroom. “Please talk to me.”

“Don’t act like you aren’t in on it.” He gets two steps from the bedroom when Kane steps in front of him.

“Put him on my bed,” Kane orders. Blaze backs up, wildly looking around. I know Kane warned me, but nothing could have prepared me for the deer-in-the-headlights look Blaze has. “Now, Blaze.”

“I can’t,” Blaze whispers. “I need him.”

“Doc needs to look at him, and we need to go after Lev.”

Blaze keeps backing up until his back hits the wall. I raise my hands and walk to stand in front of him. “Blaze, please let Doc look at him. We have to get his wounds taken care of so he doesn’t get an infection.”

“You just want me to lay him down so you can kill me!”

“What the fuck?” Kane says, walking into the room. “What are you talking about?”

“It’s my fault! It’s all my fucking fault! Please, don’t kill me, Kane! Please!”

“Moya lyubov’. I’m not going to kill you. Can you lay Jaxon down?” Kane is taking small, measured steps toward Blaze, who still has Jaxon clutched to his chest. “Please.”

“No. It’s all a lie.”

“Blaze,” Jaxon says weakly, and all eyes flash to him. “Kane would never hurt you.”

“Baby,” Blaze says, burying his face in Jaxon’s neck. My heart is ready to explode from my chest.

“Litso kukly,” Kane says gruffly, walking so Jaxon can see him.

“Daddy.” Jaxon’s bottom lip quivers, and Kane rubs his thumb across it. “You didn’t leave me.”

“Of course not. The Doc needs to check you out, though.”

“Sir? Can you lay me down?”

“Jaxon, he’ll—”

Jaxon presses his lips against Blaze’s, and his entire body shudders. “I won’t let him hurt you. I promise.” Jaxon’s eyes flash quickly to Kane’s, letting him know that he’s aware Kane won’t really hurt Blaze. He just already knows how to handle Blaze in this condition. Apparently better than any of us.

Blaze walks slowly to the bed and lays Jaxon down. Jaxon bites into his bottom lip to keep from screaming. The doctor steps up to the bed, and the look on Blaze’s face has him hesitating. “You hurt him, and I’ll rip your heart from your goddamn chest,” Blaze threatens.

“Sir, I’ll be fine. Let the doctor do his job.”

“Blaze, we need to move on Lev,” Kane orders.

Blaze gets a resigned look on his face, and he kisses Jaxon’s forehead before following Kane from the room. Jaxon gives Kane’s back a sad look and then looks at me. “He still needs time,” I assure him and slide onto the bed beside him.

“I know. They didn’t let me die, so that’s a good sign. Is Blaze going to be okay?”

“It’s been really bad, Jax. But you need to worry about you.”

I see the argument on Jaxon’s poor, swollen face, but he bites it off when the doctor lays his supplies on the bed. I grab his hand in support, praying that everything is going to be okay. We have a long road ahead of us, but I’ll make sure we stay together.
