“Same here. I love you.”

“I love you too.” I hit the end call button and lean back in my chair, my mind going to Blaze.

I’ve seen him go out on murderous rampages, and I’ve always cleaned them up. But he’s never blacked out during one of them. I suspect that Eli is right that it was because of his heartbreak over Jaxon. I think about the fear in his eyes last night when he thought I was going to kill him or take Jaxon from him, and I wonder where I went wrong with Blaze. I’ve done everything that I can to keep him from going to jail or getting locked up. I don’t know how to convince him I would never hurt him.

“Kane.” I look up at the sound of Eli’s voice with a smile.

“What can I do for you,Dragotsennyy?” I beckon him forward, and he crosses his arms over his chest defensively.

“Jaxon is awake and asking for you.”

I sit forward in my chair and open my laptop. “Not now.”

“When?”

“I said. Not. Now.”

Elijah surprises me by coming over and slamming my laptop closed. “And I asked when.” I raise a brow and watch him struggle with fighting against me. “I know you slept in the chair in your room last night. If you didn’t give a fuck about Jaxon, you wouldn’t have stayed in there to watch over him.”

“I was watching over Blaze.”

“Don’t you dare lie to me,” Eli hisses. “After everything we’ve been through, at least have enough respect for me not to lie to my damn face.”

“Dragotsennyy,” I say in a warning tone, but Eli shakes his head.

“You don’t get to do that. I’ve always doneeverythingyou and Blaze have wanted. I’ve never once spoken up for myself, but now I am. I deserve for you to be truthful with me. Blaze has, and he’s the least likely to know how to do that. If Jaxon didn’t mean shit, you wouldn’t have rushed out of here to save him, and you wouldn’t have let Blaze get close to him again. We need Jaxon in our lives, Kane, and the faster you realize that, the better off we’ll all be. He’s in pain, and the first person he asked for when he woke up wasyou.”

Eli marches from my office, and I don’t know whether to be proud or bend him over my fucking knee. I know I need to figure out what to do about Jaxon. I heard everything Kira and Elijah have said, but I’ve never been in this position either. I never let myself get close enough to anyone but Elijah and Blaze; even then, I kept a part of myself closed off until Jaxon. He broke through the wall I built around myself with hurricane force, obliterating everything I was taught growing up. After my mom died, my father jumped from woman to woman, never letting himself stay around long enough for them to make him weak. I did that with Jaxon, and he almost made me lose my entire empire, but he also fought to protect it. He has enough on me that I should be in prison, but I’m sitting in my office, and he’s lying upstairs after taking a beating because ofme.

Mind made up, I get up from my chair and head upstairs. When I walk in, my heart skitters to a stop. Blaze is tenderly looking at Jaxon, whispering softly. In all my years with Blaze, I never thought I’d see the day. Jaxon hears me walk in, and his big blue eyes lift to mine.

“Give me a minute with Jaxon.”

Blaze looks ready to argue, and Jaxon pats his chest. “It’s okay, Blaze.”

Blaze eyes me warily, and I don’t know how to convince him I’m not his enemy. Blaze kisses Jaxon’s forehead and slides from the bed. “I’ll make breakfast. Anything special?”

“Bacon. Lots of bacon.”

“Done,” Blaze says with a smile. He gives me one last look and strides from the room.

I start pacing, trying to get my shit together. Now that I’m up here, I have no idea what to say. I spin on my heel to face him, and he’s trying to sit up in bed. Propping the pillows against the headboard, I help him get comfortable. With a sigh, I sit on the edge of the bed. “I’m not sure where to go from here. I’m still fucking pissed about what happened.”

Jaxon smiles sadly. “That’s what I wanted to talk about. I can go back to Diego’s if that’s what you need. I know this doesn’t make up for anything.”

“I need you to tell me everything that he said.”

Jaxon lays his head against the headboard. “He was pissed that Blaze killed his men, said that you owed him, and had one of his lackeys beat the shit out of me. He wanted information.” Jaxon looks up, fire blazing in his eyes. “I didn’t give him anything, Kane.”

“I know you didn’t,Litso kukly. What happened to you is my fault. I started this shit with Lev, and you got caught in the crosshairs, and for that, I apologize.” I go to stand up, and Jaxon grabs my arm.

“Kane, no matter what you decide about me being here, just know I love you.” I look deep into his eyes, and the truth is staring right back at me, but I still don’t know if I can believe him. I’m so fucked up that I don’t know whether to trust my own judgment.

I nod, indicating that I understand, and Jaxon’s face falls. I stand from the bed and turn around when I get to the door. “Kira is coming home today.”

“That’s awesome news.”

“I’ll bring her to see you when she gets here.”
