Kane slowly lifts off Blaze, and big wracking sobs are coming from Blaze. They are so bad that he can’t even catch his breath. “Moya lyubov’. I need you to breathe.”

I drop to my knees beside them. “Blaze.” I reach out with a shaky hand and rub it across his forehead. “What happened?” Jaxon walks over and kicks a gun away. I look at him, and he shakes his head.

Jaxon gently lowers to his knees with a grimace. “Blaze. Sir. Breathe.”

That springs Blaze into action, and he starts fighting to get Kane off him. Kane grabs Blaze’s wrists and slams his hands down to the floor. “Blaze. Stop,” Kane barks. “We’re just trying to help you.”

“I can’t do this!” Blaze yells. “Just let me end it!”

Suddenly, everything makes sense. My eyes flash to Jaxon, and he nods, letting me know I’m right. Was Blaze trying to kill himself? “No, no no,” I chant. “Blaze, you can’t do that. Weneedyou.”

“Stop fucking saying that!” Blaze bucks hard and knocks Kane to the side. He scrambles to his feet, going toward the gun. Kane jumps to his feet and tackles Blaze from behind. The gun skids away when Blaze’s fingers graze it. “NO!”

“Go get the doctor and a sedative,” Kane orders. “Now, Elijah!”

I rush from the room and find Doc in the study. I ramble what I need and take off back toward the room. Kane and Blaze are locked into a power struggle, with Blaze bucking every chance he gets. Doc comes in behind me with a syringe in his hand, and the roar of rage that comes from Blaze has me backing up. “Goddamnit! NO!” He struggles harder until Kane gets a tighter grip on him. Doc stabs Blaze in the thigh with the syringe. “No,” Blaze cries and slowly slumps on the floor.

Kane lays there for a minute, making sure Blaze is knocked out, and sits back on his knees. “Help me get him in bed.” Kane and Doc get him situated, looking resigned. Jaxon crawls onto the bed by Blaze’s side and curls up against him.

I look at Kane. “What the hell happened?”

“Doc, be on standby for when he wakes up.” Doc nods and leaves the room. Kane finally turns to me and opens his arm for me. I shake my head, and his eyes narrow. “Come here.”

“I want to know what’s going on.”

“And I will tell you. I just need you close.” I tuck myself under his arm, and he explains everything that happened that set Blaze off. “I don’t know if we can help him alone anymore.”

Jaxon’s head springs up before I can open my mouth. “We aren’t sending him anywhere.”

“Litso kukly—”

“No. I’ll figure it out. I’ll research whatever I have to, but you aren’t putting him in some sort of fucking mental hospital.”

“Jaxon,” Kane says, warning in his tone. “You saw what just happened. I don’t want to do it, but I don’t want him to hurt himself again, either. He pulled the goddamn trigger.”

“I’m with Jaxon,” I say quietly. “We’ve always promised that we would never do that to him.”

“You weren’t here, Eli.” Kane massages his forehead and sits heavily on the side of the bed. “If I had moved a second later, Blaze wouldn’t be here. I’m out of options.”

“No, you’re giving up on him,” Jaxon argues.

Kane slowly turns to look at him, and I watch Jaxon struggle to hold his gaze. “I’m not giving up on him. I’m trying to help him.”

“Then bring someone here.” Jaxon lays back down with his head on Blaze’s chest. “He was there for me, and I’m going to be there for him.”

Kane’s expression turns to regret with the reminder that Blaze has taken care of Jaxon for days. Every meal, every pill, everything Jaxon needed, Blaze has provided. I climb onto the bed on Blaze’s other side and lock hands with Jaxon on Blaze’s stomach. I hear Kane sigh, and then he disappears from the room.

“You know if this is what he wants, we can’t fight him,” I say regretfully.

“It’s not going to get that far, Eli.” Jaxon swallows. “Some shit happened while I was there, and Blaze doesn’t even know he helped me through it. He just thinks he took care of me physically, but he took care of me mentally, too. This isn’t what Kane wants. He just doesn’t know what to do now.”

“Neither do I,” I admit. “But we can’t give up on him.”

“We’ll figure it out.”

I hope so because Blaze needs to realize he belongs here.
