Two days have passed since Blaze’s meltdown, and we have to keep him sedated most of the time. Jaxon has taken up pouring over every bit of research for Blaze’s condition, trying to find something to help. We can keep him calm for a couple of hours, but something gets triggered, and he loses his shit again. Kane is always watching closely when he’s awake and disappears when we have to sedate him again. At night, Kane drags Jaxon to bed for his meds and sleep. We’ve all fallen into some sort of weird pattern trying to take care of each other.

“Jaxon, why don’t you take a break?” He’s sitting at the desk in Blaze’s room with a mountain of books and a laptop in front of him. “You’ve been at this for hours.”

“I’m fine, Eli,” Jaxon says with a smile. “I think I’m onto something.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I mean, it’s an article that doctors didn’t write, but it makes sense, I guess.”

“What is it?”

“It looks like an at-home how-to on his illness and what to do.” Jaxon shrugs. “I’ll let you know more when I’m done.”

“You’re done now,” Kane announces, walking into the room. “I’ve let this go for two fucking days. You need rest so you can heal. You can’t do that sitting there, so let’s go.”

“Kane, I’m so close—”

“You don’t think I’ve done the same thing as you,Litso kukly? I’ve probably read everything there is for Blaze, and it used to work.” Kane pulls Jaxon to his feet. “But it isn’t anymore. We need more help.”

“I already said he isn’t going—”

Kane kisses Jaxon hard to silence him. “I’m not saying that. We need to pull someone in.”

“I hate to bring up a sore subject, but you don’t know who you can trust,” Jaxon points out. “I got through your defenses. What’s to say someone else won’t either?”

“You’re different, and I’m going to let what you just said slide.”

“I don’t mean anything by it. I’m just saying.”

“You need to go take your meds and rest. And I’m not asking.” Jaxon and Kane’s eyes stay locked until Jaxon finally sighs. “I’ll be there in a minute.” Jaxon makes his way out of the room, and Kane turns to me.

“You need a break too. Come on.”

“I’m not leaving him by himself, Kane.”

Kane moves before I can react and lays his hand on my throat. “I’m done letting you defy me,Dragotsennyy. I will admit I needed what you said to me. But it’s my job to take care of you, and you’ll let me do that. Now, go to the room with Jaxon.”

Kane steps back and levels me with a look that has me obeying him without question. When I walk into Kane’s room, Jaxon is sitting in the middle of the bed, eating out of a tray. “Daddy Claus took care of us.”

I can’t help but laugh. I climb onto the bed beside him and dig into the food. “I’m still waiting on my Maserati,” I say between bites. “But I’ll take this until then.”

Jaxon chuckles. “Same. Although, a Maserati would be fucking sweet.”

“Consider it done,” Kane says, walking into the room. He sets Jaxon’s laptop in front of him. “Will this work?”

“I don’t know, but I want to try it when I can.”

“Do you know what you’re risking?” Kane asks, sitting in the chair.

“I don’t care. It says to give him something hecancontrol so that something needs to be me.”

“Why you?” I ask out of curiosity.

“It’s just a feeling. When I fucked up, Blaze lost that control over me. No matter how much he wants to be there for me, he still can’t trust me. I need to remind him that he can.”

“You need to heal first,” Kane adds. “What you have in mind will take a toll on your body that you can’t handle right now.”

“Doc said I’m healing good. I’ll give it a few weeks for that, but until then, we need to stop sedating him. This isn’t right.”
