“Baby? Are you good with that?”

“If it helps you and Kane, yes.”

Looks like it’s time to pay this motherfucker another visit.

* * *

Before we left the house, we strapped Jaxon into a bulletproof vest under his shirt, and Blaze gave him a Glock. We watched as Jaxon went from sweet submissive to the cop he was trained to be. The last thing I want to do is put him in danger, but I also don’t want him to feel like we’re treating him like he’s fragile.

“Carter said that Carls is the only one home,” Blaze says, ending the call. “How are we playing this?”

“We go in first,” I instruct. “Scare the fuck out of him, let him know that we found out about Jaxon, and then he can come in.” I turn to Jaxon. “You don’t step foot in that place until we’ve made sure it’s safe. Do you understand?”

“Yes. I promise I don’t have a death wish. He just needs to know he fucked up.”

“You know he’s going to die soon, right, Baby?”

“I know,” Jaxon answers. I stare at him, waiting to find an ounce of remorse for what he knows has to happen to his old boss. He stares at me head-on. “I can handle this, Kane.”

“I just need you to realize that this life is completely different from the law.”

“I get that. Trust me. I need you to realize that I’m not taking this lightly.”

“It’s showtime, then,” Blaze announces.

We don’t wait for Dalton to open the door because we don’t want our presence known until we walk into the house. Blaze slides out first, and when I step out behind him, he takes up position at my side. Blaze pushes the door open, gun drawn.

“Honey, I’m home!” Blaze yells when we don’t find Captain Carls in the living room. We search the house, and when we get upstairs, I hear a shower running. Blaze motions toward the bathroom, and I nod, letting him know he can do whatever he wants. He busts into the bathroom, rips the shower curtain back, and aims his gun at Carls with a grin. “Did ya miss me?”

Captain Carls pales and tries to cover himself up. I reach in, turn the shower off, and toss him a towel. “Cover up. We have shit to talk about.”

“You can’t just come into my house and make demands!”

Blaze wiggles his gun at him. “This says that I can. Now, cover that sorry excuse of a dick up and come downstairs. No wonder your wife is cheating on you. It’s so itty bitty.”

With a shake of my head, I walk downstairs to sit on the couch and wait. Blaze shoves Captain Carls into a chair minutes later. “Do you remember what I told you the last time we talked?” He opens his mouth, and I raise my hand to cut him off. “I don’t want to hear your bullshit. You lied to me.”

“I haven’t lied!”

I roll my neck to keep from losing my cool. Jaxon needs his payback before I put a bullet through this asshole’s eyes. “Try again.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“That’s how you want to play it?” Blaze asks. With a nod at Carls’ silence, he pulls a phone from his pocket, types a message, and hits send. The phone on the coffee table lights up, and Carls’ face loses all color. “Shocking, I know.”

I grab it before Carls has a chance to unlock it and flip it so he can see. “This is your handler phone, yes? The one you communicate with your undercover officers with?”

“I don’t have any undercovers.”

I sling it at him, and it smacks him right on his naked chest. “You don’t?” I tilt my head to the side, and his body starts shaking. Blaze sends another message from his own phone, and the front door opens. When Carls’ eyes land on Jaxon aiming a gun at him, his eyes widen. “Then who’s that?”

Jaxon sits beside me, never lowering the gun. “You set me up to die. But you didn’t count on one thing.” Jaxon waits for Carls’ full attention. “Me falling in love.”

“I don’t know what lie you told them, but I would never place an undercover with Kane.”

Jaxon jumps from the couch and presses his gun to Carls’ forehead. “You liar,” Jaxon hisses. “You took someone who barely graduated and threw him to the fucking wolves. You didn’t give a fuck about me. All you cared about was taking him down. But it backfired.”

“What are you going to do? Shoot me?” Carls asks.
