“Yeah, aight.”

“I mean it, Mal.”

“I promise. I want you to be happy, Jhorie. You deserve to be after everything you put up with in the past from Dre.”

“You deserve to be happy too, Mal. I hope you know that.”

She was quiet for a minute. “I do. I love you. I’ll talk to you soon.” Mal had made up her mind about what her life would look like. Maybe Jessup would get it together. Maybe he wouldn’t and she would walk away same as I had done with Dre. Regardless, I loved her and would support whatever decision she made.

After I locked my phone Ezekiel spoke. “Malin?”

“Yes, she called to ask if I was okay and if I’d seen Dre. He was here?”

Ezekiel nodded. “Briefly but he decided it was best for him to leave.”

“He decided oryoudecided?”

“We mutually decided.”

“But you persuaded him with your fists? Mal said his face was messed up.”

“I only hit him once; the rest was handled as a favor.”

“Why didn’t you just handle it?”

“A mature man knows the importance and beneficial use of his time. I prefer delegating whenever possible.”

I rolled my eyes and smiled while standing and moving to him. “Thank you.”

“For?” His gaze was pensive.

“Delegating.”

He grabbed my hips and pulled me into his lengthy frame. “You’re welcome but thanks is not necessary.”

“Then delegate all you want, Omari. As long as you know you don’t get todelegatewhen it comes to me.”

He smirked and leveled his face over mine when I looked up at him. “I’m the only one who gets tohandleyou, Jhorie. You’ll never have to worry about me delegating with you.”

“That sounds promising.”

He chuckled, tipped my chin up, and kissed me. “I assure you it is. I have to go or I’ll be late. I’ll see you this evening.”

After I was dressed, I called Zoree to let her know I would be heading to her soon. She immediately began apologizing, saying she had intended to reschedule because of a last minute change in her schedule. I assured her it was fine and decided to spend the next few hours at the house. A quick trip to the kitchen to grab a snack changed my plans again when I ran into Cress and her children.

It was crazy to think I have nieces and nephews now.

Amel ran right to me, bouncing on his toes as he grinned up at me with expressive eyes and a smile that matched the man’s whose bed I just left.

“Hey, you.”

“Hi, we’re going to see Mommy’s new school. Do you want to see it too?”

“Uhh…” I glanced at Cress who approached with her daughter sitting on her curvy hip. It amazed me how lithe and light she was as a dancer but defied the norm of what a dancer should look like.

“You home today?”

“I am. Had a canceled meeting.”
