Smug muthafucker.

“She’s not changing her mind and neither are you based on the amount of favors you owe me.”

“Threats. The Omari way.” His expression was laced with amusement but beneath it lied some truth.

“What you consider threats I consider business negotiations.” After I kicked my desk chair back enough to sit, I guided Jhorie into my lap. She shifted for comfort and I held her in place with my hands on her thighs.

“Ms. Abraham, I presume.”

“That would be me.” She extended a hand across the desk and he leaned to accept, offering a firm shake before he flipped open the folder he’d brought in with him.

“All I need are your signatures and you’re all set. I’ll file everything when I get back to the office and you’ll receive the official documents in the mail.”

“Wait, I thought there was a waiting period.”

“There is.” His eyes landed on her before he continued. “A week but we’re expediting this today. Your future husband is an impatient man. As soon as you sign, you’re an Omari, legally binding. If you want out, you better say so now.” He winked at Jhorie who glanced over her shoulder, leveling her eyes on me. Mine were waiting, unwavering, and she smiled, shaking her head.

“Nope, we’re doing this. Pen?” She held her hand out, wiggling her fingers. I passed her the one resting on my desk. Matthews pushed the license across the polished wood. She signed first and I followed.

“Don’t we need a witness?”

I lifted the pen once more and scribbled Elias’s name. He wouldn’t mind. “There, now we have a witness’s signature.”

“That’s forgery in front of a judge.” She raised a brow his way. “If you’re really a judge?”

Matthews laughed, nodding. “I am but your husband tends to do things his way. I owe him so I work around his indiscretions.”

“All of this sounds very ominous andveryillegal.”

This time I was the one who chuckled after kissing my wife on the neck.Wife. She was my fucking wife.“It’s not.”

Matthews shot me a look which I ignored but wasted no time making clear, “You can leave now.”

“Omari, don’t be rude. He just broke the law for you.”

“Yeah, Omari. I just broke the law for you.”

Like I hadn’t manipulated the law to make sure he was in place to do favors like this.

I lowered my chin and Matthews smiled amusedly, standing after he collected the marriage license. “Congratulations, Mrs. Omari. Your husband is making clear that I’ve overstayed my welcome. Good luck with this one.”

“Thank you but I don’t need it. He’s smart enough to pick his battles with me.”

I sure as fuck am.

“Well damn, looks like you’ve got the right one, Ez. Good luck withherthen.”

I chuckled and extended a hand, which he shook. “Thanks again. I appreciate you.”

“You should,” he mumbled, heading to the door.

After he was gone, Jhorie turned to me, grinning. “What did you do for him?”

“I made him a judge.”

Recognition flashed in her eyes but I didn’t give a fuck about Matthews. I only cared about the woman who now had my last name.

“You’re mine,” I murmured and she nodded.
