His phone rang.

He thought it was Charlotte. He cursed when he saw Neil’s name on the screen. Didn’t that big brute know Murdoch was a man on a mission here? “Hang on, babe. It’s Neil.”

He talked to his replacement fast. The call still lasted fifteen minutes, especially after Neil conference called that butt-wipe Elliot Marshall and got him involved.

Finally, the situation was resolved. Neil could just figure out the rest by himself. When Murdoch turned back around, that stubborn sneaky woman was gone.

Damn it, she just liked to make things complicated, didn’t she?

Well, he was a man who enjoyed the hunt.

Time to find his woman.

Again. This was probably going to be a lifelong thing, wasn’ it?

Murdoch wouldn’t behappy that she’d just taken off, but she had to do this herself. She felt a serious rush of guilt when Charlotte asked where he was. She would have to make it up to him. And explain her reasons much better than she had.

If she didn’t justdo thisnow, Zoey didn’t know that she’d want to do it at all. This terrified her. She wasn’t stupid—she knew it stemmed from all those locked gates and rejections as a kid in the system. The very things she’d fought to protect Pen from.

And it was not just Pen this time.

It was Simon, and Paige, and Ariella, and Luc, and Rafe and Caine, and especially Pen. They had all been hurt enough.

But…hadn’t she, too? Maybe she was so damned afraid of that very thing happening? She didn’t want Murdoch to see the rejection she suspected was about to become inevitable.

That was it. Fear riding in control once again. Only, she didn’t wanthimto see her get turned aside like she had so many times before.

Because Murdoch mattered. More than maybe she was ready to admit.

Zoey entered the conference room Charlotte had told her she’d send Zoey’s brand-new sibling to, then pulled out her phone. Texted.

—I’m sorry. We’ll talk. I’ll explain. I promise.

Communication. Not something she was all that great in, either.

His response made her wince.

—You better your ass we will, woman. Where are you? I can be there as fast as I can climb the stairs.

She started typing a reply and paused. Reconsidered.

It would be too easy to just let him be the buffer between her and the world. Zoey wasn’t quite ready to take that step. She was contemplating how to deal with the rapid-changing feelings that man brought when someone stepped into the borrowed conference room.

Zoey looked up. And met dark-brown eyes the same color as her own.

Herfullbrother stood right there, looking at her. Looking so much like Rafe and Caine she wondered why she had never noticed it before.

Zoey stood, right where she was.

She didn’t have a clue what to say now.

One of thebiggest stars in Hollywood continued to stare at her. Zoey stared back.

“I’m Slater Davis. How can I help you?”
