Page 124 of Hearing her Cries

To Gregory, there were so many of those Denita’s daughters out there…they were all disposable. Plenty more to do what he wanted with. Like they weren’t human or nothing.

Well, some of them might be disposable. But not Crispin Maria.

Crispin Mariamattered.

Vaughn straightened the utility worker uniform they'd borrowed from Hector's other cousin. Hector had a lot of cousins. For five hundred dollars, they'd gotten the uniforms and the internet company truck for four hours. To do whatever they wanted in it.

Yanking a sexy lady right out of her little house on the corner sounded like good use to Vaughn. His blood was pumping, excitement ran through his veins. Charged him.

He loved the excitement of this kind of work.

There were two vehicles parked there. The woman's white Jeep. And a big SUV with TSP printed on the side.

That was going to be a complication. Still, the internet company had been working in this neighborhood for a week. Vaughn and his pals would blend right in. He’d have to pay them a cut of what Gregory normally gave him, but he was good with that this time.

He had other plans to make—the money didn’t matter much to him at all now.

They waited. The guy in the TSP SUV left, looking damned pleased with himself. Guess the guy had gotten him some. Yeah, Vaughn could imagine it.

"Remember, this bitch is a cop. She's going to have a gun in there. We have to act fast." It was twenty minutes before one now. Vaughn was good at this stuff.

Maybe in another life he’d been a spy or something.

The boyfriend drove away.

Vaughn waited. Until he was sure the guy was gone. Guy was another cop, after all. Gregory had already killed one cop in the last three years—Vaughn didn’t want to kill another. Especially since…the woman inside was a cop, too.

That could complicate things. He’d have to take Crispin Maria out of state, definitely.

"Let's do this. I have...plans...I need to make. For me and my special lady."

He'd just trade the older sister for the younger, then he and his precious angel would be on their way. They’d put Garrity and Finley Creek behind them forever.

Vaughn was looking forward to having her all to himself. Forever.

He liked the sound of that.

Zoey wipedtears from her cheeks. It wastime.

No more excuses to stay.

She'd taken all but the barest necessities to the new place in Finley Creek. Today was it. Her last in Garrity.

This was for real.

That knowledge and Murdoch’s words before he’d left an hour ago kept playing over and over in her head.

What did she really want?

Did she want to stop being with him?

No.

Zoey felt like herself when she was with him. Free. Real. Like she was exactly where she was supposed to be, and where she wantedto be.

Her happiness was ultimately up toher.Just like her future was, no matter what life threw at her. But being with him made her feel like that was a real possibility again. Maybe it was too much to put on his shoulders, though?
