Page 128 of Hearing her Cries

She was shivering. There was a light rain now, but it felt like ice against her skin. "My daughter, I can't find her. We can't find her. I need to get home. So we can decide what to do."

His face tightened. "I see. Can I help you look for…your…daughter?"

"The police are looking for her. My sister, she's with the TSP. We are looking for her now. Just...pray for her. Please? She's just a girl. My baby."

Bonnie didn't see the hand coming at her face until it was far too late. It cracked against her cheek.

She cried out.

"They were never your daughters to begin with. They were Denita's!"

He had something in his hand. He pressed it to her skin. Bonnie looked down. A transdermal patch. Fire shot through her where it pressed.

Drugs? Even more terror filled her. "What are you doing? Why?"

He had saidDenita.

She tried to scramble backwards, but he had ahold of her braid. He was pulling her closer.

She kicked, but it did little good.

He just held her there, no matter how she fought. She tried to scream. His hand was over her mouth now. He was behind her. How had that even happened?

He was so big, so much bigger than she was.

She felt his body pressed to her back. His smell surrounded her. Terror built even more.

If he killed her now, she’d never be able to find her baby girl.

Bonnie tried to fight, to pull away, at least to scream. He was so big. So strong…

His hand tightened over her mouth.

"Shh, my darling. My beautiful Bonita. Just a little sedative. A new one, not even on the market now. It works very, very quickly; I promise. Fortunate, wasn’t it, that I came back here to get the samples from my office? To sedate Denita’s young daughter. Yes. You are going to beminenow. The way Denita should have been before you destroyed her. Shh, my beautiful Bonita. You are going to be mine now—forever." His hand tightened on her face, her mouth and nose. His other arm around her waist. “Just go to sleep now, my darling.”

Bonnie tried to fight. She did.

But he was big and strong and whatever was on that patch was burning.

Her head swam. She tried to pull back, to bite. She couldn't. He turned her. Lifted her.

The last thing she registered was the man's mouth on hers as he brushed a kiss against her lips, then pulled away.

"You are mine now. The way you were always meant to be."

Vaughn waitedon the edge of the Finley Creek campus. And seethed. Worried. About Crispin Maria.

He should have loaded her into the van before he’d left Gregory’s, but with Paul and Jerry and Hector, and Ted and Ted’s brother—he hadn’t wanted to risk her.

Or show a weakness.

Or even be seen with her now. Just in case.

He didn’t want his angel afraid of five strangers. And he wouldn’t be able to comfort her in front of those punks either. No. He had had to leave her. He’d kissed her on the mouth, just lightly.

He knew she was a virgin. Innocent. She’d probably never really even kissed a guy.
